John Spilman Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Holman-Howe Funeral Homes Lebanon on Nov. 21, 2025.
John Douglas Spilman, 68, of Gravois Mills, Missouri passed away on November 17, 2025. He was born on January 13, 1957 in Bloomfield, Iowa to John Dean and Betty Lee Fickel Spilman. He graduated from Davis County High School in 1975 and then attended Iowa Lakes Community College in Emmetsburg, Iowa, graduating from their auto body repair program. On July 31, 1976 he married Lynn Garrett in Bloomfield. The couple lived in Bettendorf, Iowa for many years and raised two children: Brooke and Jason. They semi-retired to the Lake of the Ozarks where he worked for Hulett Chevrolet in the auto body repair shop. They also helped manage several Airbnb's located in their neighborhood at the lake.

Doug loved staying busy and enjoyed fixing cars and do it yourself projects. He was an avid Iowa Hawkeye sports fan. He and Lynn enjoyed their yearly trip to the Iowa State Fair. They shared their love of the state fair with their grandchildren Croix and Serena and were looking forward to taking Valenzya when she was old enough. He also enjoyed taking his grandkids to the Quad City Mallards Hockey games.

He is survived by his wife, Lynn Spilman; daughter, Brooke (Richard) Baker of Davenport, Iowa; son, Jason (Kristi) Spilman of Rock Island, Illinois; three grandchildren, Croix Baker, Serena Baker, Valenzya Spilman; two sisters, Sue Spilman, Carol (Dan) Orona both of Bloomfield, Iowa; brother, Bill (Sarah) Spilman of Sun Prairie, Wisconsin; several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, November 25, 2025 at the Wagler Funeral Home in Bloomfield with Pastor Don Naftz officiating. Cremation will follow the service. Visitation will begin at 1:00 p.m. on Monday with the family present to greet friends from 5-7:00 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established to the Davis County Dollars for Scholars.
