John Stackman Obituary

Published by Hackman Family Funeral Homes - Hackman Chapel on Oct. 17, 2016.
John Stackman age 74 of Sturgis, Michigan went to be with his Lord and Savior early Monday evening October 17, 2016 at the Sturgis Hospital. He was born December 21, 1941 in Sturgis, Michigan son of the late P. Donald and Violet (Stevens) Stackman. John graduated from Centreville High School with the class of 1959. While in high school he was active in the Future Farmers of America. He continued his education at the Fort Wayne Bible College for three years, transferring to the Olivet Nazarene College in Kankakee, Illinois where he graduated in 1977 with a Bachelor Degree in Theology. From his childhood on he was always very ambitious and enjoyed working. As a child he enjoyed working in his parent's bait shop. A treasured childhood experience was time spent in the West where his father was a professional hunter and trapper. He shot his first wildcat with his father's help when he was just three years old. When still in high school he got started in farming. He continued farming for several years and also drove truck for Jake Pierson's farming operation. He later worked at GDL Machine Shop and for the Harter Corporation. In 1967 he was chosen by the Tuloma Oil Company (a division of Standard Oil Company) to start the Nottawa Fertilizer Plant, this involved going to farmer's homes and introducing them to the fertilizer products. This was easy for John due to his love for meeting and talking to people. After getting the fertilizer business established he went on to work for Grove & Barnell Construction and Coachman Industries. On August 24, 1968 he married Sandra Yunker at the Lima United Methodist Church in Shipshewana, Indiana. Following his graduation from college John pastored the Sugar Grove Church of the Nazarene in Pennville, Indiana and the LaGrange Church of the Nazarene in LaGrange, Indiana. Due to health issues he left the ministry. He worked several temporary jobs including helping his brother-in-law Stephen Yunker with the fall harvest. John became an agent with the Prudential Insurance Company and later became an agent for Farmers Insurance and also sold for Farmers Mutual Hail Insurance Company and qualified for award winning trips due to the amount of business he sold. He later sold his agency and started his own business Gateway City Kitchens and Interior which he managed until his illness in September of 2016. He was a member of the Sturgis Church of the Nazarene and Gideons International. John was always happy to be able offer a New Testament to someone on a one on one basis, with a word of testimony, and help with the distribution at the St. Joseph County Fair. Another ministry he enjoyed was collecting clothing and household items to be sent to the Society of Indian Missions in South Dakota for needy Native Americans. He was also a member of the Sturgis Area Model Railroaders where he enjoyed meeting with his "train buddies" twice a month and watching the trains run. In his earlier years he enjoyed hunting, fishing and turtle trapping. More recently he was enjoying making custom greeting cards for family and friends. He and Sandy also loved train excursions and many Amtrak Trips. Following his injury in 2009 John was confined to a wheelchair. Although it was not his choice he accepted it well. He is survived by his loving and dedicated wife of 48 years: Sandra; brothers-in-law and their wives: Stephen and Karen Yunker and Marc and Cheryl Yunker both of Sturgis; sister-in-law and her husband: Andrea and Peter Marchand of Durham, California. Although John did not have any children of his own he enjoyed very much his nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, and great great nieces and nephews and cousins as well as many treasured friends including Mark and Roxanne Barry of Marathon, New York. The family will receive friends from 4:00 – 7:00 P.M. today, Wednesday and 10:00 – 10:45 A.M. Thursday at the Sturgis Church of the Nazarene, 70031 S. Lakeview Ave. in Sturgis. Funeral services celebrating the life of John Stackman will begin at 11:00 A.M. Thursday at the church. The Rev. John Shoup will officiate. A graveside committal will follow the service at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in rural Bronson. The Hackman Chapel of Hackman Family Funeral Homes, 114 S. Nottawa St., Sturgis, MI 49091, 269-651-2331 is honored to be entrusted with the arrangements. The family suggests those wishing to make a memorial donation in Mr. Stackman's memory consider the Society of Indiana Missions, P.O. So sorry to see John had passed away. Was nice to see you both at the pool when my daughter & I would go for the water aerobics class. I know my husband always enjoyed talking trains w/ John, they're common interest. Our prayers are with you at this difficult time.

Dear Sandy - Just this very moment - praying for you and the service - I got chills because I just know that the salvation message will be given - I prayed for open hearts to receive it - because this is the testimony I first seen and witnessed meeting you and John for the first time at a Gideon Meeting. John and You demonstrated your love for the Lord, your love for others and your desire for others to know the Lord. I will remember the "unspoken" testimony of both of you when we came to that meeting. God has already said "Well - done, thou good and faithful servant" to this dear brother that touched our lives the short time we knew you both. God comfort you and keep you close sweet sister - until you join your dear husband again in Glory. Love Kim and Al Lammott

25 years ago I left Marathon New York in tears and drove 600 miles to Sturgis Michigan with a Ryder truck. I was young, terrified and questioned my career decision countless times. Then I met John and Sandy. They more than looked out for me, they welcomed me (and a year later Roxanne) into their family. We were very fortunate and thankful to celebrate Thanksgiving, Valentine's Day and Easter with them. They invited us out, invited us over and we would talk for hours (if it weren't for Sandy, we would have talked all night). John and I from day one had a special bond. His heart of gold and stories were priceless. We would laugh for hours (I called him Skipper, he called me Gilligan, he'd offer me a Pop and I'd say I drank Soda and on and on). 15 years later we moved back to Marathon NY, it was time to catch up with family. We left the Midwest in tears and thankfully a mover drove the truck this time. To this day I would still be trying to back between 2 trees with the Ryder truck if it weren't for John. During our 10 years back in NY we kept in touch all the time with John and Sandy. We would laugh, tell stories and talk about the good and bad things we had to deal with. Letters in the mail, cards for every occasion, Christmas gifts, phone calls (and messages), it never got old (John and Sandy always were one step ahead of us too). Our visits back to Michigan, John and Sandy ALWAYS would put the effort to make our stay special at the Stackman Inn. Cookouts, deserts, car rides to unique places or events we will miss this so much, but most of all, I will miss my best buddy John. He loved life, loved people, and would do anything for anybody. I'm sure he knew how much he was loved in return It's a heartfelt loss. So many great memories, we Love and miss you John, you will never be forgotten

We were so sorry to hear of John's passing. He was a good man. He was always friendly and loved to talk. We were happy to see him in church last year when we visited Sturgis. Praying for you Sandi, as you go forward.
