John W. Stastyshyn passed away unexpectedly on February 20, 2025, at the age of 77.
A celebration of life will be held at Rhoney Funeral Home, 5893 Hoover Rd, Sanborn, NY, on July 12, 2025-visitation at 11 a.m., service at noon.
Born on June 21, 1947, in Maine, NY, John was a graduate of Buffalo State College. He devoted his life to his family, his students, and his
community-always showing up with quiet strength and his signature dry humor that could make even the most serious moment a little lighter.
He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Diane. Together, they raised three children-Jennifer, Matthew (Lisa), and Daniel (Laura) Stastyshyn-who carry forward his values, wisdom, and wit. John was a cherished Grandpa (Bapa) to Joshua, Allison, Kristina, Jack, Emily, and Jay, and Great Bapa to Ananias.
John was predeceased by his brother, Lynn. He is fondly remembered and survived by his sister-in-law Krista, nephew Aaron, nieces Courtney and Kristen, and great-nieces and nephews.
Known as "Mr. Stysh" to generations of students, John taught and coached at Newfane Central School for 35 years. He was respected for his steady presence and genuine care. Outside the classroom, he ran J & J Home Improvement, where he built homes and earned the trust of his community. John was a man of few words, but when he spoke, people listened-and often laughed. His one-liners and "John-isms" became family classics, always delivered with perfect timing.
In retirement, John and Diane moved to The Villages, where he enjoyed softball, pickleball, and golf-earning two hole-in-ones he accepted with typical modesty.
Though his passing was sudden, his legacy is enduring. Rest easy, John. You built a beautiful life.
