John Frank Stec went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on February 20, 2026, at the age of 81.
John was born on February 7, 1945, in
Hamtramck, Michigan to Frank and Olga (Silitsky) Stec. He served in the Army National Guard from 1962 until 1965. John obtained an associate's degree in law enforcement from Mercy College of Detroit and completed a 4-year program in theology through Sacred Heart Seminary. Continuing a path of service, John graduated from the Oakland Policy Academy and started his career as a Police Officer with the Highland Park Police Department in 1969. After roughly 14 years with Highland Park, he worked with the St. Clair County Sheriff Department and was then hired by Macomb County Community College Police Department as an officer. He was promoted to the rank of Sergeant in 1986 and served in that role until his retirement in 2010. During his years in law enforcement, John received a Valor Citation for actions of extraordinary heroism in addition to several commendations for exceptional police work.
Embracing life with a joyful spirit that shone through in everything he loved, John's hobbies were as vibrant and varied as he was-playing the trumpet, hunting, camping, painting, and capturing the world through photography. Music was one of his greatest delights; whenever a favorite song came on, he'd break into animated air trumpet, guitar, or drum performances that never failed to bring a smile. Deeply social and wonderfully outgoing, John cherished every opportunity to spend time with family and friends. His adventurous heart took him across the world, including a meaningful trip to Burkina Faso to support missionary friends, as well as travels to Mexico and many visits to see his children and grandchildren in Washington, Oregon, Pennsylvania, and Colorado. Wherever he went, John carried his warmth, laughter, and love for others with him, leaving treasured memories in his wake.
John was a fun loving soul whose quick wit and bright spirit endured even through the challenges of dementia. Until his final days, his humor remained a gift to those around him, matched only by his kindness, generosity, and unfailing desire to put others first. A lifelong learner and devoted man of faith, he found great joy in reading and studying the Bible, ultimately earning his Master of Divinity later in life-a testament to his passion for spiritual growth. Sharing his faith and guiding his children toward a deep relationship with God was his greatest calling. To know John was to enjoy his company; he was the kind of friend you could always rely on, and his presence brought warmth, laughter, and genuine connection to everyone fortunate enough to meet him.
Beloved father of Katie (Mike) Tesmer, Regina Stec, and Jonathan (Rachael) Stec; dear brother to Chris (Joel) Berin, Mary (Steve) Avery, and the late Tom (Karen) Stec. Loving grandfather to Reagan, Rebecca, Ryan, Luke, Faith, Jackson and Jamison.
The family extends its deepest gratitude to the compassionate staff of The Willows Senior Living, where, over the past three years, John truly became part of their family. We will forever appreciate the love, kindness, and dignity you showed him every single day. Your care brought comfort not only to Dad, but to all of us who loved him. Please know that your "Papa Bear" always felt at peace with you and genuinely loved coming "home."
