John Steele Obituary

Visit the Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory - Owensboro website to view the full obituary.

John Kennedy Steele, 89, known to his children as Dad, to his grandchildren as SuperDad, and simply as Jack to his friends, passed away on February 7, 2026. He leaves behind a rich legacy of unwavering faith, family devotion, and remarkable strength. As a devout Catholic, his life was guided by his deep faith, strong values, and genuine kindness. To his children, he was a loving and dedicated father who always placed family at the heart of his world.

He enjoyed a devoted marriage of 64 years with his wife, Kay, the love of his life and the cornerstone of their family, who survives him. His unwavering presence and unconditional love will be treasured by generations to come. He was known for his warm and welcoming nature, making everyone feel valued and at ease.

A deeply proud American, he cherished his country and its ideals of freedom and responsibility. He honored those principles throughout his life with integrity, gratitude, and respect.

Few things brought him greater joy than the excitement of the Kentucky Derby, from its long-held traditions to the thrill of cheering on a winner. He also enjoyed life’s simple pleasures, sharing a cold beer, watching sports, and occasionally placing a friendly wager on a game.

The family deeply appreciates the outpouring of love, support, and kind messages received since his passing. Many have shared how much he meant to them, remembering him as a great man, a best friend to their fathers, and someone who was always there when it mattered most. To those who knew him well, he was truly one of a kind—a hell of a man whose presence, humor, and heart will never be forgotten.

Jack was preceded in death by his parents, V. J. Steele, Sr. and Pauline Hagan Steele, an infant son Michael Ray Steele, and six brothers and sisters, V. J. Steele II, Charles Steele, Robert H. Steele, Pauline Steele, Ruth Reed, and infant Mary Ann Steele.

Those left to cherish his memory include his loving wife, Metta Kay Steele; his children Jude Steele (Christie), John Steele (Pam), Nick Steele, Reverend Joe Steele, Matt Steele (Beth), and Mary Anne Steele; his one granddaughter Brittany (Ben); eleven grandsons Hunter, Austin (Katie), Mitchell (Kelly), Logan, Nate (Dani), Taylor, Connor, Drake, John Andrew, Arlo, and Ezra; and twelve great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his beloved sister, Sarah Edge, along with many nieces and nephews.

• Visitation will be held at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory on Friday, February 13th, from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm, with prayers at 6:30 pm. Private visitation for the family will be Saturday morning prior to leaving for the church.

• The funeral service will be held at Saint Joseph and Paul Catholic Church on Saturday, February 14th, with Mass beginning at 10:30 am.

• Burial will follow the Mass at Resurrection Cemetery - A Reception will follow the Burial at Our Lady of Lourdes Parrish Hall.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Carmel Home, 2501 Old Hartford Road, Owensboro, KY 42303. Messages and condolences to the family can be shared at www.glenncares.com.
