John Stuppy Obituary

Dr. John Joseph Stuppy II passed away on Sunday, March 3, 2024, due to complications from Parkinson's disease. He was sixty-eight years young.

John was born to Dr. Laurence and Mary Stuppy in Los Angeles, CA on April 25, 1955, the youngest of their six children. Since childhood, he was passionate about traveling the world, enjoyed listening to and playing music, and always relished a great meal with friends and family. John loved being in a theater, whether playing drums with his high school band, attending a musical on Broadway, or catching a few new movies.

He was notoriously driven and self-motivated, attaining the rank of Eagle Scout at the age of thirteen. He attended Harvard School For Boys (Class of 1973) and it was there that he learned to write software code. In 1977, John built a microcomputer from scratch in his Stanford University dorm room.

He continued his education at Stanford to earn a coterminal master's in education (MA). He went on to earn an MBA focused on high-tech fast growth marketing strategies at Kent College and a Ph.D. in education policy analysis at UCLA specializing in adaptive technology. John was awarded UCLA Outstanding Graduate Student of the Year and was nominated for a Stanford Alumni Lifetime Achievement award.

John's go-getter attitude was prevalent in his work life. He created the first online tutoring system and earned 39 patents. He devoted his career to helping students learn, working with leading K-12 edtech companies. He owned consulting firm EDUMETRIX, which helped education technology, products, and services companies succeed.

John instilled this love of learning, business drive, and desire to make the world better in his four children. He left behind a legacy of learners, teachers, helpers, leaders, and innovators.

John was predeceased by his parents Laurence and Mary, his brother William, and his five beloved German Shepherd dogs, all named Nani. He is survived by four siblings, Henry, Laurence, Mary, and Bettijane; his former wife Peggy and their four children, John (Colleen), Thomas (Kelsey), Alli (Mike), and Melia (Yaniv); and his nine grandchildren, Ellie, Mary, Jude, Sophie, Jack, Cameron, Quinn, Anne, and Pearl.

For those wishing to honor John, the family encourages donating to The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research. They have set up a fundraising page in John's honor: tinyurl.com/johnstuppytribute

John was a wonderful part of my freshman dorm at Stanford. And I enjoyed talking with him later at reunions. My thoughts are with his family as they adjust to life without him in their midst. Parkinsons is a tough disease. Sorry you all had to face that. Kim Hornung-Marcy
