John David Summers, Sr., 95, of Mechanicsville, Maryland, passed away peacefully on July 3, 2025, at his home surrounded by the love of his family.
Born on January 13, 1930, in Washington, D.C., he was the son of the late William Eugene Summers and Marian Claudine Boarman.
John (known as David) was a graduate of Surrattsville High School in Clinton, MD. On July 18, 1953, he married Lolita Carolyn (nee: Carrico) Summers in Washington, D.C. Together they celebrated over 59 wonderful years of marriage before her passing March 21, 2013. He was employed as a meat cutter for Giant Food, Inc., until his retirement in the early 1980's. He then dedicated himself to becoming a full-time caretaker for his son, John, something he was proud to to do. He was devoted to his family, and was always available for them, no matter what they needed. His hobbies included hunting, fishing, gardening, working on cars, and watching Orioles baseball. He enjoyed cooking for the family. His breakfasts were exceptional. He had a close relationship with his siblings, especially his brothers who passed before him, James Arthur and Thomas Allen Summers. David, Carolyn and John, Jr. spent 10 years of retirement living a simple, peaceful life in the mountains of Tennessee with his brother Arthur and his wife living close by. David will be remembered for his easy-going disposition, and his love and devotion to his family.
Along with his parents, William and Marian and wife Carolyn, David is also preceded in death by his siblings; James Arthur Summers, Thomas Allen Summers, Mary June Zamrock, Elizabeth Lee "Betty" Roberts, Jean Marie Gibbons, and Ellen Adair Ross.
He is survived by his loving children: Cynthia S. Petrella (John) of Boyds, MD, Laurie S. Miller of Mechanicsville, MD, William M. Summers (Kathleen) of Charlotte Hall, MD, Lolita C. Summers (Dave Staubs) of Mechanicsville, MD and John David Summers, Jr. of Leonardtown, MD; grandchildren; Calvin Petrella (Evelyn), Samuel Petrella (Camila), Summers Miller, Taylor Miller, Melody Summers (Julian Holmes), Magen Summers, Ashlyn Summers; five great-grandchildren: Lily Petrella, Benjamin Petrella, Theodore Petrella, Isabella Petrella and Maverick Moss Holmes; and extended family and friends.
The family will receive friends on July 14, 2025, from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. with a service following at 3:00 p.m. at Brinsfield Funeral Home, P.A. 22955 Hollywood Road, Leonardtown, MD 20650. Interment will be private.
