John Wiley Tate, Sr.

John Wiley Tate, Sr., 80, of Reidsville, passed away on Wednesday, December 24, 2025, at Annie Penn Hospital.

A graveside funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM, Monday, December 29, 2025, at Roselawn Memorial Gardens with Rev. Billy Harmon officiating. Military graveside rites will be performed by the Rockingham County Honor Guard.

John grew up in Ruffin, NC in the Happy Home Community. He faithfully served his country in the US Army, serving in Vietnam. When he returned home, he started a career working in residential and commercial construction, a job he continued until retirement. He was an avid outdoorsman; a lot of that time was spent hunting or fishing. While at home he loved to read, especially Louis L’Amour Novels.

He is survived by his sons, John Tate, Jr. (Teresa), William Tate, Stephen Tate (Lori); daughter, Marvette Cox (Butch); grandchildren, Megan, Dwight, Karli, Seth and Jessica; great grandchildren, Aiden and Sadie; sister, Nina Oxendine; the mother of his sons, Shirley Simmons.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William Hassell Tate and Mary Elizabeth Tate; wife, Barbara Tate; sisters, Mozelle Palmer, Osteen Hundley, Lucille Walker, Frances Evans, Nancy Parrish and Margaret Southard.
