John Taylor Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Rupp Funeral Home, Inc. on Feb. 24, 2026.
John Richard Taylor

January 26, 1950 – February 20, 2026

John Richard Taylor, born on January 26, 1950, in Greenville, Ohio, passed away unexpectedly at his home in Monroe, Michigan, on February 20, 2026, at the age of 76.

John was a dedicated servant to his country and committed family man throughout his life. He attended Ritter Catholic High School in Indianapolis, Indiana, graduating in 1968. At the age of 19, John enlisted in the United States Navy in 1969. He honorably served for twenty years, attaining the rank of Machinist's Mate Chief Petty Officer before retiring in 1989.

Following his distinguished military career, John continued his professional pursuits with Detroit Edison's Enrico Fermi II Nuclear Power Plant. He worked diligently in nuclear maintenance for twenty years until he retired in 2010.

John married his beloved wife Cheryl on May 5, 1973, at St. Michael Catholic Church in Indianapolis, Indiana. He was a devoted husband, faithful father, and steadfast provider to his family.

John was a man of varied interests, spending cherished time with his son racing gas RC cars, airplanes, and helicopters. In his younger years, he enjoyed golfing alongside his father and had a passion for bowling. Beyond his hobbies, John loved his family deeply and found fulfillment in coaching youth baseball.

Preceded in death by his parents, William E. and Luella (Haselmire) Taylor, and his brother, Thomas Taylor, John is survived by his beloved wife of over 50 years, Cheryl Lynn (O'Riley) Taylor of Monroe, Michigan; two sons, Christopher and Joshua Taylor, both of Monroe; sister, Cathy Washbush of Dublin, Ohio; grandchildren, Carolyn Taylor and Eithen Smith; and great-grandchild, Ezekiel Smith.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Monroe on Saturday, February 28, 2026. He will lie in state at 10:30 a.m., followed by Mass, officiated by the church pastor, Rev. Fr. David Burgard at 11:30 a.m. Interment will take place at Crown Hill Cemetery in Indianapolis, Indiana, at a later date.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association. His unwavering dedication and love for his family will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew him.
