John Bruce Tevis, 68, passed away peacefully in Kansas City, Mo., on December 3, 2024, after a courageous battle with cancer. A man of many talents and an even bigger heart, John was cherished by family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Born on May 9, 1956, in Mason City, Iowa, John lived in Independence and Iconium, Iowa; Tucson, Ariz.; and Warsaw, Mo., forming lifelong friendships wherever he went. A jack of all trades, he was always ready to lend a helping hand, fix whatever was broken, or simply share a beer and a good laugh.

John found his greatest joy in the outdoors, whether he was hunting, fishing, camping, boating, snowmobiling, or cruising the open road on his Harley. He was an avid Kansas City Chiefs fan, a lover of seafood, and someone who treasured every moment spent with family and friends. One of his most endearing traditions was calling loved ones on their birthdays to sing the birthday song; a simple but heartfelt gesture that brought smiles and warmed hearts year after year.

John is survived by his children, Kristen Tevis, Shawn (Nessa) Tevis; and their mother, Rhonda Zimmerly; grandchildren, Lexi Higdon and Lizzie Timp, all of Independence, Iowa. He is also survived by his mother, Coriene (Crapser) Tevis of Marion, Iowa; siblings, Jay Tevis of Tampa, Fla., Jim (Julie) Tevis of Marion, Iowa, Jean (Bob) Walston of Fort Dodge, Iowa, Jayne (Dan) Rouse of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Joe (Justine) Tevis of Omaha, Neb. and Jeremy Tevis of St. Joseph, Mich. John also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, extended family, and countless friends across Iowa, Missouri, Arizona, and Minnesota.

He was preceded in death by his father, Evan "Jake" Tevis; an infant brother, Joshua Tevis; and sister-in-law, Jackie (Jay) Tevis.

Memorials may be sent to: John Tevis Memorial Fund, 2250 Edwin Dr., Marion, Iowa 52302. A funeral service with a celebration of life and burial at Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery in Mason City, Iowa, will be held at a later date.
