John Thompson Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Houser-Millard Funeral Directors - Jefferson City on Jan. 11, 2025.
John Ray Thompson, 72, of Jefferson City, passed away on January 9, 2025. He was born on December 27, 1952, in Jefferson City, the son of the late Alfred and Imogene "Jean" (Huot) Thompson. John was a proud graduate of Linn High School and earned his Associates degree in Machine Tools at Linn Tech. On September 20, 1980, he married Rita Boeckmann at the Cathedral of St. Joseph.
John began his career at Westinghouse and then became an over-the-road truck driver delivering mail and grapes. Later, he found his calling as a welding teacher, a role he proudly held for 28 years at Nichols Career Center. Outside of work, John had many interests that kept him busy and brought him joy. He loved farming, collecting/selling farm toys, and working with tractors-particularly his beloved red tractor models. International, Farmall (he was not a fan of the "green" John Deere!). John also enjoyed playing in the snow, offering rides in his side-by-side, as well as road tripping with his friends Joe McKee (Linda) and Richard Rackers (Jean). Most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren, even attending their sporting and choir events.
He was also a proud member of the Missouri Chapter 1 Red Power Tractor Association and Missouri River Valley Steam Engine Association.
He is survived by his loving wife, Rita; son, Josh Thompson (Sara); daughter, Jennifer Mehmert (Adam); brother, Tom Thompson (Becky); and two grandchildren, Nicholas and Abigail Mehmert; favorite nephew, Shane Thompson (Gina); niece, Kris Koch (Aaron); and four great-nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents; in-laws, Alphonse and Clara Boeckmann; numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and especially his cousin and best friend, James Matthews.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, January 14, 2025, from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM at Houser-Millard Funeral Directors. A prayer service will follow at 1:00 PM officiated by Roy Barnard.
In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy can be made to the Missouri River Valley Steam Engine Association, Wounded Warriors, or Shriners Children's Hospital.
John will be deeply missed by all who knew him. His love for his family, his teaching, and his many passions will be cherished forever.
