John George Tompary

John G.Tompary, 101 fell asleep in the Lord peacefully March 8, 2026. He was born to George and Argento Tompary. Loving husband of the late Helen neé Secaras. Beloved father of George, Harry, Michael (Renee), Andria McGovern. Cherished papou of Dr. Alexa Tompary, Jonathan Tompary, Steven Tompary, Dr Jessica McGovern (Julia Schwartz), Brendan McGovern (Michelle Sims) and Cameron McGovern (Tessa Artale McGovern). Adoring great-grandfather to Rosemary Tompary-Pfautz and Magdelena McGovern.

John was a Navy man who served in WWII as a quartermaster on the island of Iwo Jima. He built Quonset huts, which housed US troops. He met the love of his life and was married in 1950. He was a wonderful father, papou, and propapou who loved his family. He took the family on road trips and drove to the NY State Fair in 1964. He took his family near and far, but if there happened to be a waterfall nearby, he would go out of his way to go to see it and put his feet in it. He traveled the world. He loved his Greek heritage and was a member of Ahepa Northshore Chapter #94. He was a Boy Scout leader, a brick layer by trade, a liquor store owner, and a stamp and coin collector. He loved building models, but in his later years, built many Lego sets and loved doing jigsaw puzzles. He always had a smile on his face and compassion in his heart.

Visitation Friday March 13, 2026, from 4pm until 8pm, Nelson Funeral Home 820 W. Talcott, Park Ridge, IL. Funeral services Saturday March 14, 2026 at 10am St Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church 2727 W. Winona, Chicago, IL. Short visitation precedes funeral from 9:30-10am. Burial with military honors Saturday March 14, Elmwood Cemetery, 2905 Thatcher Rd. River Grove, IL.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made in John's honor to Wounded Warriors Project 4899 Belfort Road Suite 300 Jacksonville, FL 32256 or St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church would be appreciated.
