John Patrick Tormey, Jr. (affectionately known as Johnny) of Taunton, formerly of Quincy, died peacefully in Boston, surrounded by his loving family, after a quiet and courageous battle with cancer, on Saturday, August 30, 2025. He was 46 years old.
John was born in Boston on January 16, 1979. Raised in West Quincy, he graduated from Quincy High School before earning his undergraduate degree in English from Bridgewater State College and his Master of Fine Arts degree in Creative Writing from Boston University. He went on to work for Keolis Commuter Services as a dedicated track laborer, where his commitment to fairness and solidarity extended beyond the workplace. He was deeply devoted to advancing workers’ rights through his tireless involvement, first with the Laborers’ Union Local 223, and later with the The Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Employees Division Local 201. He was always striving to improve the lives of those around him. John had several pieces published that centered around the working class and the labor movement.
John met the love of his life in college, and their relationship bloomed during a writing class. Together, they built a home filled with laughter, warmth, and devotion. He adored children—especially babies—and had a remarkable way of making every child in his life feel cherished and special. To many, he was a protective “big brother,” always ready with encouragement, a quick joke, or a helping hand.
An avid reader and writer, John had a sharp wit, a gift for storytelling, and a sense of humor that was both quick and self-deprecating. He had the ability to make anyone laugh and brighten even the toughest days. Outside of his work and advocacy, John found joy in exercise—whether lifting weights, running, or walking—always dedicated to keeping himself strong and active. He loved vacationing at the beach, especially down the Cape with family. Whether rooting on any Boston sports team, debating politics, trying a new restaurant, or discussing comic books, favorite shows, or movies, John tried to enjoy life as much as possible, and to spend it surrounded by those he cared about.
John will be remembered for his kindness, his humor, and the way he made people feel seen, valued, and loved. His presence was a blessing, and his memory will continue to inspire all who knew him.
John was the beloved husband of Sarah Kate (Rocha) Tormey of Taunton. The two married on August 2, 2008, in Taunton, and together they shared 17 years of marriage. He was a cherished son of John P. Tormey, Sr., and his wife Amy of Tyngsboro, and the late Mary Patricia (Plant) Tormey, who died in 2023. John was the devoted father of Kieran, Declan, and Nora Tormey, all of Taunton. He was the dear brother of Erin Youhas and her husband Kevin of Braintree, Joseph Tormey and his wife Patricia of Braintree, and Michael Tormey and his wife Natalie of Canton. He was the dear step-brother of Sarah Caylor of Nashville, Tennessee. John is also survived by his father and mother-in-law: Stanley and Christine Rocha of Taunton; his brother-in-law Adam Rocha and his wife Kristen of Connecticut, and many loving nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to greet the family during the visiting hours on Sunday, September 7, 2025, from 4-8 PM in the McDonald Keohane Funeral Home SOUTH WEYMOUTH at 809 Main Street (Rte. 18 opp. So. Shore Hospital).
