John Walsh, age 71, affectionately known as "Big Daddy," passed away tragically in a house fire on the morning of March 18, 2025. He was born on June 23, 1953, in Brooklyn, NY, to the late John Walsh and Patricia Yander. John was the beloved husband of the late Rickie Rae (Hahn) Walsh, who passed away in April 2022. Their marriage had its ups and downs, but through it all, they loved each other and always tried to make it work. Together, they raised four children who were the center of their world: Chrissy Reilly (Mike Reilly), Johnny Walsh (Melissa Bradley), Jimmy Walsh (Doraina Walsh), and Joey Walsh (Anjelica Walsh). John was also the proud grandfather of seven grandchildren: James, Mikey, Abby, Joey, Peyton, Jemma, and Ashton. John grew up in Brooklyn and graduated from Tilden High School before stepping into the workforce. Over the years, he held many jobs but spent the majority of his career working in construction until he became disabled and could no longer work. His journey took an unexpected turn when he moved to New Mexico—initially chasing a girl—but it was there that he met Rickie, the woman who would become his wife. They lived in New Mexico for a few years before deciding to settle closer to family, ultimately planting roots on Long Island, where they raised their children and built a fulfilling life together. John was a man with a larger-than-life personality and a heart that welcomed all. He was well known throughout the community, whether at a local bar watching a game with friends, out on the water with his boat, fishing or not, or coaching his kids in sports. His motto was "go big or go home," and thankfully, that applied not just to the way he lived but to the way he loved. He believed in "the more, the merrier" and always opened his home and heart to family, friends, and anyone in need of a place to feel welcome. He leaves behind his loving siblings: Cathy Dugan, Jim Walsh (Colleen Walsh), Tish Walsh, Karen Hudson, James Yander (Lori Yander), sister in law Roxane Hicks (Glenn Hicks), brother in law Richard Hahn (Jane Hahn), sister in law, Bug Hahn and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends. He was predeceased by his brother in laws, Bob Hahn and Glen Hahn (Norma Hahn).Though John’s passing is a heartbreaking loss, his family finds peace in knowing that he is reunited with his beloved Rickie. His legacy of love, laughter, and generosity will live on through his children and grandchildren, who will carry forward the spirit of Big Daddy. He will be deeply missed but never forgotten.
