John L. Warland, age 75 of Prairie du Chien, formerly of Turtle Lake, WI, passed away Sunday, February 5, 2023 at home surrounded by his family. He was born in Turtle Lake, WI on January 10, 1948, the son of Buster and Louise (Johnson) Warland. John grew up in Turtle Lake as the 4th generation of the Warland family and graduated from Turtle Lake High School with the class of 1966. He then completed one year of college at Concordia University before going to serve 2 terms in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. Upon returning home from service, he joined the Turtle Lake Police Department, where he massed over 20 years of service. He spent the last 10 years of his law enforcement career as the Chief of Police in Turtle Lake until retirement. John later moved to Prairie du Chien where he married Darla Warland on December 4, 2004. After retirement, John worked as a bartender at Mitchell's Liquor Box Tavern and Tackle for 10 years. He enjoyed gardening, flowers, bird watching, and woodworking in his shop. He is survived by his wife of 18 years Darla; their children Chris, Billie (Mark), and Marlys Warland, Frankie (Lora) Lazinski, Amanda and Peter Green, and Deborah (Joshua) Nachtigal; his siblings Leonard (Sandy) Warland and Peggy (Doug) Rode; 9 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister Mary Troop.
A Memorial Service will be Saturday, February 18, 2023, at 1:00 P.M. at the Garrity Funeral Home Chapel in Prairie du Chien with private interment at a later date in the Almena Cemetery in Turtle Lake, WI. Friends may call at the funeral home on Saturday from 11:00 A.M. until the time of services. Military honors will be accorded by the Prairie du Chien Honor Guard.
