John Waz Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Myrtle Beach Funeral Home - Myrtle Beach on Dec. 17, 2025.
John L. Waz, 85, of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, passed away peacefully at home on Monday, December 15, 2025, surrounded by the love of his family.

John was born in Poughkeepsie, New York, where he spent most of his life raising his family and building a home filled with love and laughter. He worked for many years in the maintenance department of the Arlington Central School District, where he was known for his strong work ethic and willingness to help others. John retired in 2002 and soon after made the move to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, a place he came to love for its warm weather and the chance to be closer to his daughter. John was never one to sit still. He was happiest when he was busy-whether he was tending to his garden, playing a round of golf, working in the yard, or tinkering in the garage. There was always a project to work on, something to fix, or a way to make things better. He took pride in staying active and found joy in the simple, everyday moments of life. Above all else, John cherished the life he shared with his wife of 60 years, Mary. Their marriage was the foundation of a strong, loving family and a true example of devotion and partnership. John was predeceased by his parents, Helen and John Waz, and his nephew, Edward Waz, Jr.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Mary (Musmerci) Waz; his brother, Edward Waz, and his wife, Sally, of Pleasant Valley, New York; his niece, Debra Rubino, of Pawling, New York; his daughter, Christine Kizer, and her husband, Jamie, of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina; and his son, Leonard Waz, and his wife, Danielle of Tivoli, New York. John was a proud and loving grandfather to four grandchildren who were the light of his life: Carson Thomas Kizer, Madelyn Delaney Kizer, Blakeley Claire Waz, and Logan Leonard Waz, as well as his grandpuppy, Maggie (aka Margaret). He held each of them close to his heart and was endlessly proud of who they are and all they have accomplished. To his family, John was so much more than a name-he was the best daddy, husband, Grampy, Poppy, Pa Waz, and friend. He will be deeply missed, but his love, laughter, and the many memories he gave us will be carried with us always. Those who knew John knew his kindness, his steady presence, and his quiet strength.

He had a way of making people feel at ease and was always ready with a helping hand or a bit of practical advice. His legacy lives on in the family he loved so deeply and in the countless lives he touched through his work, friendships, and generosity. As we grieve his passing, we also celebrate a life well lived-one marked by dedication, love, and simple joys. We are grateful for the time we shared with him and for the lessons he taught us about hard work, family, and showing up for the people you love. Though he may be gone from our sight, he will never be gone from our hearts.

John was a great soul! He lived on my street for many years. He always greeted me with that New York accent and that big ole smile, "Hello Joanne". He spent lots of time working on his yard. He had one of the best sense of humors. I will miss seeing John on my daily walks. I will reflect on the wonderful memories he left. Rest in eternal peace, John.

John was a great kidder and liked to tell stories. We always enjoyed their company. Life changed and stole moments of laughter and card playing. We will always remember his kindness and sweet smile. Condolences to Mary and his children. He was so filled with love and pride for them.
