Obituary published on Legacy.com by Greene Funeral Home - Downtown Chapel on Feb. 12, 2026.
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of John Wayne Williams, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend, who departed this world on February 8, 2026, at the age of 77.
Born on June 20, 1948, in
Rock Hill, South Carolina, Wayne was the cherished son of the late Elbert B. Williams Sr. and Mary Boyd Williams, whose love and guidance shaped the man we came to know and love.
Wayne shared a beautiful life with his devoted wife, Patsy G. Williams. Married on April 27, 1967, they were approaching their 59th anniversary, a testament to their enduring bond and mutual devotion. Together, they built a family filled with love and laughter, including their beloved daughter, Rhonda Williams, who blessed them with two cherished grandchildren and, in turn, two precious great-grandchildren, each a source of immense pride and joy for Wayne.
A proud veteran, Wayne served his country valiantly during the Vietnam War as a member of the Navy, specifically as an ACB1 attached to the Marine CBs.
Wayne's professional life as a heavy equipment mechanic was a natural extension of his passion for all things mechanical. With a knack for fixing and fabricating, he was truly a jack of all trades. His love for motorcycles, particularly his treasured Harley Davidsons, was well-known, as was his fondness for working on cars. Whether riding through town or tinkering in his garage, Wayne found joy and fulfillment in these pursuits. Flea markets and family outings to local eateries were among Wayne's favorite pastimes, though it was within the comfort of his home that he found his greatest happiness. A hard worker with an unwavering dedication to his family, Wayne's presence was a calming constant and a source of strength for all who knew him.
Wayne was preceded in death by his brothers, David Lyle Williams Sr., Roger Williams, and Wilson Sturgis, as well as his sisters, Martha Williams and Joann Williams Ghant.
He is survived by his loving wife Patsy, his brothers Bert Williams Jr. and Billy Williams, and his sisters Bessie Meadows and Peggy Costner. His legacy lives on through his daughter Rhonda, his grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, each of whom carries forward a piece of his spirit.
The family is planning a memorial service for a later date, where we will gather to celebrate Wayne's life, sharing stories and memories that highlight the incredible impact he had on all of us. Wayne's warmth, humor, and steadfast love will be profoundly missed but forever cherished.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Wayne's memory to a
charity of your choice, reflecting his generous spirit and love for helping others.
May we all find comfort in the memory of Wayne's life well-lived and the love he shared so freely.
