John Willis Obituary

Published by Legacy on Dec. 13, 2025.
John Earl Willis of Hampton, Virginia, a dedicated and cherished individual, passed away on December 8, 2025, at the age of 79. Born on December 26, 1945, in Springfield, Ohio, John lived a life marked by service, love, and laughter.

A proud veteran of the United States Navy, John served his country with honor in the Vietnam War and continued to support his nation as a contractor including directly contributing to Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom. His career also included a fulfilling tenure at NSWDG, where his commitment to excellence was evident in every task he undertook.

John was a man of many passions and interests. A devoted fan of The Ohio State University (Go Buckeyes!!), he could often be found cheering on his team with unparalleled enthusiasm. He loved the serenity of fishing and the magic of cinema, always finding new fishing spots and frequently visiting theaters to watch a good film. His family and friends were his greatest joy, and he was known for his infectious smile, hearty laughter, and playful teasing.

A Journeyman Aviation Machinist and accomplished handyman, John approached every challenge with experience, gratitude and a positive attitude. His love for travel and history led him to visit many historical sites, deepening his appreciation for the world and its stories.

John was preceded in death by his parents, Earl and Thelma Willis, his grandson Nicholas, and his beloved cats, Duchess and K.C. He leaves behind his beloved wife of 37 years, Sharon, who stood by his side through life's journey. He is also survived by his children: Penny, Christine (Jason), John Jr. (Tammy), Cheryl, and Mary (Mark); his grandchildren: Trae, Cherokee, Dillon (Courtney), Jessica (Billy), Guy, and Kayla (Justin); and five great-grandchildren, with two more on the way. John also leaves behind his brother, Robert, and a host of cherished friends who will forever hold his memory dear.

John Earl Willis was a beacon of joy and kindness in the lives of those who knew him. Though he has passed from this world, the legacy of his laughter, love, and unwavering spirit will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing him.

A private Celebration of Life will be held in the coming year. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Wounded Warrior Project (https://www.woundedwarriorproject.org/) in memory of John are appreciated.
