John Wimmer Obituary

Wimmer, John
GUILDERLAND - John D. Wimmer, age 53, passed away on Tuesday, February 18, 2025, after a courageous battle with Leukemia and has now become one with the Force. Born in Albany on June 2, 1971, John was the son of the late Claudia and Wilhelm Wimmer.
John graduated from Rensselaer High School and HVCC with an associate's degree in criminal justice. His professional career began at Albany Medical Center in the Pathology Department, then he worked at the Muscular Dystrophy Association, which he loved. Since 2013, John has worked for Progressive Insurance.
John was a passionate music lover and talented saxophonist, whose dedication to his craft brought him joy throughout his life. He played with the Yankee Doodle Band and the Town of Colonie Band, where he was cherished for his musical contributions. A true sports fan, John was an avid supporter of both the New York Yankees and the Detroit Red Wings. His love for adventure also extended to the world of Star Wars.
John was a devoted and loving husband to his soulmate and best friend, Stephanie (Mabie) Wimmer. Their bond was unwavering, and together they shared a deep, enduring connection.
In 2016, John faced the challenge of being diagnosed with Large B Cell Lymphoma. Over the years, he bravely fought through chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and a stem cell transplant, showing incredible strength and resilience. When his illness returned in September 2024, John once again exhibited unyielding courage, never giving up, and continuing to inspire all who knew him.
In addition to his wife, John leaves behind his sister, Donna Wimmer-Wilson (Brian); and his brother, Josef Wimmer (Kimberly). He is also survived by his mother-in-law, Lori Mabie; sister-in-law, Kimberly Cirigliano-Johnson (Todd); and niece, Danai Cirigliano-Johnson. He was predeceased by his sister, Lisa (Wimmer) Clark; and his best friend of 40+ years and brother-in-law, Jeffrey Clark. He is also survived by his beloved pet companions, Ginger-Belle, Finn (FN-2187), Bailey, Madeline and Missy (the misfit) and the late Zamboni.
The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the Guilderland EMS, AMC NYOH staff, especially Dr. Chaukiyal and Dr. Bellomo and Dr. Lindy Davis and her team for the care, concern and compassion shown to John.
A funeral service will take place at 4:00 p.m., on Friday, February 21, 2025, at the W.J. Lyons, Jr. Funeral Home, 1700 Washington Ave., Rensselaer. Relatives and friends are invited to visit with John's family prior to the service from 2:00-4:00 p.m., at the funeral home.
