John A. Winkle, age 96, of St. Louis, MO, died Sunday, January 5, 2025 at Mercy South Hospital in St. Louis. He was surrounded by his family, and passed peacefully to meet
Our Lord.
His funeral services will be on Friday, March 28th. Visitation at Mary Mother of the Church (5901 Kerth Road, St Louis, 63128) at 10:00 a.m, mass at 11:00. Military honors will follow at Jefferson Barracks Military cemetery.
John was born November 13, 1928 in Elizabeth, NJ, one of ten children, the son of the late John and Lena (Wojiack) Winkle. He was married to Adele Solsky for 60 years, she preceded him in death in 2013. Surviving are four children: Jon Lewis Winkle (Barbara), Thomas David Winkle (Teresa), Mark Tracey Winkle and Marett Lombardo (Pete), 12 grandchildren, and 13 great grandchildren. He was very proud of his grandchildren and the adults they became. He also enjoyed spending time with his great-grandchildren whenever he could.
John transferred from Bristol-Myers Squibb in Elizabeth, New Jersey to St. Louis back in 1972. He retired after 33 years of service. He served in the army during the Korean War. He was a member of Mary Mother of the Church for over 50 years
John had a love for life and never knew a stranger. He would say hello to everyone he met, often giving them a lottery ticket hoping it would change their life. He never hesitated to tell a mom or dad how lovely their children were, or how well behaved at a restaurant.
He was a dedicated Cardinals fan, he loved to play and watch baseball. He was an avid bowler and ping pong player. He loved his flower beds, especially when he could make bouquets and give them out to his friends. He so enjoyed his weekly get togethers with the "mall walkers'. As they got older they did more solving the world problems then walking. Valentine's day, Summer days, Christmas, he always made sure to bring everyone a little something.
John had a great sense of humor. He was very kind, caring and generous, His love for God and his family was his biggest attribute. His favorite saying "FAMILY IS EVERYTHING. EVERTHING ELSE IS JUST EVERYTHING ELSE."
A perfect day for him was to be sitting outside, watching the birds, looking at his flowers and enjoying company with a family member or friend.
In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests donations to Lucky K-9 Rescue. (www.luckyk9rescue.org) John loved their family dog who kept him company day after day, sleeping at his feet and patiently waiting for him to drop some food.

Jon Lewis, Thomas, Mark & Marett,

On behalf of the Kaminski family I wish to express our condolences to you and yours on the loss of your father. There are such wonderful memories of our family at the Winkle home in Elizabeth, NJ. Haircuts from your mom, holidays and parties with lots of relatives. Seems like only yesterday. Your father lived a very full life & was a great person. I´ll certainly miss the lengthly phone calls with John over the last five years since loosing both my parents. RIP, John
