Pastor John Yeo

Pastor John Yeo, 77, formerly of Herrin, passed away Friday, January 23, 2026 at his home in Metropolis, IL with his wife, Sue by his side.

Pastor Yeo was the minister for Hurricane Memorial Baptist Church in Herrin, IL. He was the former pastor at Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church, Energy First Baptist Church and Matthews Baptist Church.

Pastor Yeo was an avid sports fan, especially the Minnesota Vikings and the Chicago Cubs. He was so proud to be a grandfather; he never missed an opportunity to watch his grandchildren's school or sporting events, usually being there an hour early.

Pastor Yeo was born January 8, 1949 in Marshall, Minnesota to Robert, Sr. and Inez (Stanton) Yeo.

Pastor Yeo married Betty Lou Payton on October 15, 1967 in Evansville, Indiana. She preceded him in death on May 18, 2023. He married Sue Steers on September 27, 2025 at Hurricane Memorial Baptist Church in Herrin. She survives him at their home in Metropolis.

He is also survived by his children, John Yeo, Jr. and his wife Christina of Hammond, IN, Michelle Ellis and her husband Matt of Marion, IL, Jason Yeo and his wife Bobbie of Du Quoin, IL; three grandchildren, Cameron Yeo of Hammond, IN, Zachary Absher and his wife Jessica of Moline, IL, and Cassidy Thrash and her husband Keagan of Marion, IL; great grandchild, Beau Thrash; brother, Robert Yeo, Jr. of Independence, MO; sister, Susan Richmond of Hillsboro, OR; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his first wife; his parents; brother, James Yeo; and sister, Peggy Cosentino.

Funeral Services will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 31, 2026 at the Energy First Baptist Church with Rev. Marshall Wheaton officiating. Visitation will be 9:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. Saturday at the church. Interment will be at Herrin City Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the family to assist with funeral expenses; envelopes will be available at the church.
