Pratt, Johnathan Edwin
EAST CHATHAM - Johnathan Edwin Pratt of East Chatham, N.Y., passed away at age 60 on Thursday, August 28, 2025, after complications from emergency surgery. His family is deeply saddened by his sudden death.
Johnathan was born in 1964 in El Paso, Texas. He was the beloved son of the late Leland and Mary Frances Pratt, and grew up in the Houston area.
John was a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, N.Y., and spent over 40 years working as a chef, including several four-star restaurants in New York City. John had a twinkling eye, a pirate smile, a devilish sense of humor, and a larger than life personality. As a young man, he hiked parts of the Pacific Trail, lived all over the United States, and traveled around the world for a year with nothing more than his cowboy hat and a backpack. He lived and worked in France for two years, honing his culinary skills, as he had a great passion for French cooking. He proposed to his wife, Jenna, under the starry skies of Paris, thus embarking on a deep and loving relationship that spanned the last 35 years.
John was an avid gardener, kept bees, raised chickens, and loved taking long rides on his motorcycle. John was a great music enthusiast, and loved anything from punk music to hip hop. Strangely enough, he knew the words to almost all of the B-52's songs. John was a connoisseur of fine food and wine his entire life, especially anything French. He and his wife were great travelers, and made multiple epic trips to France, Mexico, Spain and Italy. John had a deep-rooted faith in the Lord, and an unwavering commitment to spreading kindness and compassion to everyone he encountered. He will be deeply missed.
John is survived by his devoted and loving wife, Jenna (Church) Pratt, who is heartbroken over his loss; his sister, Dawn (Doug) Derr of The Woodlands, Texas; his sister-in law, Allison Russell of Canaan, N.Y.; his brother-in-law, Timothy Church of Brooklyn, N.Y., with whom he was very close; as well as multiple nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents.
A special thanks to St. Peter's Hospital, especially the staff of 6PAV, 2MAC Stepdown and the ICU, as well as the Anesthesia Group of Albany, all of whom provided such excellent and compassionate care to Johnathan during his last days.
A memorial service will be held 4 p.m., Saturday, October 11, 2025, at the Raymond E. Bond Funeral Home, Valatie, N.Y. Calling hours will be held prior to the service from 2 to 4 p.m.
