Johnnie Lee Starr was born on January 31, 1980, in Oakland, California. From a young age, he was known for his joyful spirit and deep love for his family. A true example of hard work, Johnnie always did whatever he could to help those around him. Whether it was washing cars for local businesses, collecting recyclables, or assisting neighbors with everyday tasks, he proudly gave everything he earned to his mother to help support the family.

Johnnie had a deep love for the outdoors and spent countless hours playing outside with friends. However, his life was forever changed when, while crossing the street in a crosswalk, he was struck by a drunk driver. The accident left him in a coma, and doctors told his mother that he would never wake up. But she refused to give up on him, staying by his side through those dark days. Books were read to him, songs were sung, and visitors came and went-but Johnnie heard everything, despite not being able to respond.

After 13 long months, Johnnie defied the odds and opened his eyes. The hospital rang with cheers of joy, marking the beginning of an incredible journey of strength and perseverance. Not only did he have to relearn how to walk, but he also underwent years of rehabilitation and reconstructive surgeries. By the time he reached 18, he made the brave decision to live with his scars as a testament to all he had overcome.

Despite the challenges he faced, Johnnie excelled academically, consistently earning honors with A's and B's. After high school, he enrolled in Job Corps, where he trained in patient care and formed lasting friendships. Johnnie had many interests, including a love for classical music, singing, exercising, video games, and movies. No one could match his trivia skills, and he was known for his talent in running track, where he always pushed himself to keep his miles under five minutes.

Johnnie also had a special bond with animals, and his gentle nature made it easy for them to trust him. He often visited a neighbor who cared for several adopted cats, and he especially formed a bond with a homeless Tom cat. Before his family moved, the neighbor allowed Johnnie to take the cat with him as a token of appreciation. He named the cat Bandit, and the two shared a special bond.

One of the most significant influences in Johnnie's life was his mentor, Howard. Howard played an instrumental role in encouraging Johnnie in his education, sports, and community involvement. He was a constant presence at music recitals, award ceremonies, and track meets, always there to support Johnnie. Howard's influence inspired Johnnie to give back to his community when he later moved to Utah and entered the medical workforce, determined to help others. His selflessness and unwavering kindness defined who he was, and his impact on those around him is immeasurable.

Johnnie's passing leaves an irreplaceable void in our hearts. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

Johnnie was preceded in death by his father, Myron L. Roberts, who passed away on December 18, 2025. He is survived by his mother, Bonnie Roberts; his birth father, Johnnie Lee Starr, Sr.; his loving partner, Janell Taylor; his stepson, Carson; his sister and brother-in-law, Kina and Kevin; his brothers and sisters-in-law, Cedric and Nikki, Steven and Jessica; his sister, Michelle; and his nieces and nephews: Tatiana, Kyleigh, Maliya, Makhi, Mason, Jacob, Layla, and Carter.
