Johnny Thomas Carter, known affectionately as John to his friends and family, passed away peacefully on September 19, 2024, at his home in
Lanett, Alabama. Born on October 15, 1940, in Woodland, Alabama, John's life was marked by his unwavering love for his family, his passion for creativity, and his dedication to his faith.
John's journey began as the cherished son of Edward and Winnie Carter, and he grew up alongside his brother Danny Carter, who preceded him in death. His early years in Woodland laid the foundation for a life filled with love, laughter, and the joy of simple pleasures.
In his lifetime, John was a beacon of love and stability for his beloved wife of fifty years, Linda Carter. Together, they built a family that was his pride and joy. He was a devoted father to his children, Vicki Still, Chris Carter, Shane Carter, and Lance (Amber) Carter. His role as a grandfather was one he cherished deeply, and he leaves behind a legacy of love and cherished memories with his grandchildren, Ashley Carter, AJ Carter, Justin Still, Josh Still, Lacey Downey, Jake Carter, Jared Carter, and Shane Carter Jr. His joy multiplied with the arrival of his great-grandchildren, Braden Still, Brason Still, Braxton Still, Jeremiah Carter, Kristalyn Carter, Brady Smith, Trip Carter, Bradley Welch and Chancelor Carter. John also held a special place in his heart for his Aunt Chella Laney and cousin Jim Laney, who survive him.
John's life was a testament to his loving nature, his handy skills, and his boundless creativity. He found solace and joy in attending Lanier Baptist Church and participating in the community of his family church. His artistic spirit was expressed through his oil paintings, which brought beauty and color to the lives of those around him. John's love for the thrill of the find led him to many auctions, where he delighted in the camaraderie and the chase of a good bargain.
One of John's greatest pleasures was riding his Harley Davidson motorcycle, feeling the freedom of the open road and the wind in his hair. This sense of adventure was a part of his spirit that he carried into all aspects of his life.
Retirement brought John the opportunity to indulge in his love for gardening, where he spent countless hours nurturing the earth and cultivating a bounty of flowers and vegetables. His garden was a place of peace and reflection, and it served as a metaphor for the care he took in tending to the relationships in his life.
As we bid farewell to Johnny Thomas Carter, we do so with gratitude for the time we shared with him and the lessons he taught us. His spirit will continue to guide and inspire us, and his memory will be a comforting presence in our lives forever.
