Johnny Garrett, Jr. passed away on Wednesday, November 6, 2024, at Taylor Residences in Jacksonville, Florida. He was preceded in death by father, Johnnie Garrett, Sr.; mother, Eddie Lee Garrett; and younger brother, Edsel.
Johnny attended public schools in Birmingham, Alabama and Jacksonville, Florida. He was a proud graduate of Stanton High School, Class of 1967. After high school, he enlisted into the Air Force and received an honorable discharge in 1971.
Johnny furthered his education and received degrees from the University of North Florida, and FAMU. Johnnie worked in the fields of Entertainment (Music) and Education, mostly in Florida and Georgia. He retired from the Atlanta Public School System in 2005. He was a friend and associate to many artists in the Entertainment Industry including, Dixie Hummingbirds, Curtis Mayfield, Blind Boys of Mississippi, Forth Session, and good friend, John Standberry. Johnny was also a very talented musician. He played the piano, cornet, and bass guitar, in addition to writing several songs.
Left to cherish his memory, sisters, Linda and Evangeline; nephew, Jonathan; nieces, Lina and Raya; longtime sweetheart, Estella; numerous cousins; and special friends, Ronald, Carl, Lucious, Billy, Gipp, Deborah, and fellow Stanton classmates. A special thank you to the nurses and staff at Taylor Manor/Care Center, and Community Hospice. Cremation is being handled by Sarah L. Carter's Funeral Home. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
