Johnny Ray McGreger, 78, passed away on Sunday, January 4, 2026 at NMMC Hospice in Tupelo, MS. Born April 25, 1947, in Vardaman, MS. He was the son of the late Odis Ezekial McGreger and the late Geraldine Clark McGreger.
On June 10, 1965, Johnny married the love of his life, Betty Arrington with whom he shared 50 wonderful years. He was a graduate of Vardaman High School and a faithful member of New Liberty Baptist Church. Johnny deeply loved his church family and found great joy, comfort, and purpose in his faith and fellowship.
Johnny worked alongside his brothers as a brick mason before spending many years as a long-haul trucker. He loved to travel and always looked forward to his next trip, whether it be in the mountains or to the beach, as long as there were great restaurants involved.
Johnny leaves behind his daughter, Debbie McGreger of Vardaman, MS and son, David McGreger of Vardaman, MS, his grandchildren, Matthew Gafford, Abigail "Abby" McGreger, Amber McGreger, and Christian McGreger; brother, Sam (Carolyn) McGreger; brothers-in-law, Richard Ellis, Ben J. Arrington, and Danny Arrington; sisters-in-law, Mary Ann McGreger, Nita McGreger, Linda Tedder, and Linda McKay as well as a host of nieces and nephews. Johnny loved his family more than anything.
Johnny was preceded in death by his parents, Odis and Geraldine McGreger; his wife, Betty Sue Arrington McGreger; sister, Pat Ellis; brothers, Charles Lee McGreger, Jimmy Don McGreger, Odis Earl McGreger and brother-in-law, Billy Wayne Arrington.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, January 7, 2026, from 1:00 PM until 3:00 PM at New Liberty Baptist Church in Vardaman, MS. A funeral service will follow at 3:00 PM with Bro. Jeff Harmon officiating. Johnny will be laid to rest at New Liberty Cemetery.
Serving as pallbearers are Jamie Arrington, Brian Ellis, Mikie Harden, Brandon Lovorn, Gregg Lovern, and Sammy McGreger. Honorary pallbearers are his New Liberty Baptist Church Sunday School Class.
