Johnny Hawk Vandiver Sr.
07/21/1953 - 10/29/2025
Johnny Hawk Vandiver Sr., 72, of Midland, Texas, passed away peacefully on October 29, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. Born on July 21, 1953 in McKinney, Texas, Johnny lived a bold and full life defined by courage, integrity, and an unshakable Texas spirit.
Johnny was a man of many talents and adventures. In his younger years, he was a fearless bronc and bull rider, embodying the grit and determination that carried him through every chapter of his life. He proudly served his country in the United States Army as a member of the 82nd Airborne Division, where he earned the respect of his brothers-in-arms and carried that discipline and pride throughout his entire life.
After his military service, Johnny worked in the oilfield, contributing to the backbone industry of West Texas, before beginning a long and dedicated career with the United States Postal Service where he would go on to be the Union President and where he later retired. His work ethic was unmatched, and his reputation for honesty and dependability was known by all who worked beside him.
Beyond his career and service, Johnny was a man devoted to his family. He was a loving father, grandfather, uncle, brother and friend who led by example-teaching those around him the value of hard work, loyalty, and standing tall in the face of life's challenges. One of those challenges was becoming a proud cancer survivor, living a full life for 18 years after his diagnosis.
Johnny is survived by his wife, Donna; children, Johnny Vandiver Jr. and Lauren; Kimberley Herard and Wes; grandchildren, Johnny Vandiver III, Reid Vandiver, Conor Herard and Bella Bearden; his extended family, The Vandiver's, May Family, Burns Family, and Hawk Family; as well as countless friends who will forever cherish his memory and lovingly called him "Hawk". His legacy of strength, laughter, and love will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
Johnny is preceded in death by his mother, Mozelle; father, John Hawk; brother, Kenneth; brother, Scottie; sister, Diane; and brother, Doug.
A graveside service will be held at 1pm on Wednesday, November 5, 2025 at Resthaven Memorial Park followed by a celebration of Johnny's life at Indulgence Catering, 4906 Briarwood Avenue in Midland, TX.
The family would like to express their gratitude to P.K. Patel, Johnny's long-standing doctor and friend.
