Jolene Weathers Edwards, 97, passed away on January 29, 2026 at her home in Raleigh, NC.
Born in Rolesville, NC on May 14, 1928, she was the daughter of the late Lonnie F Weathers and Lillian Young Weathers. She was predeceased by her brother, Lonnie L Weathers, and her two sisters, Lillian Eddins and Faye Perry, and her son John A Edwards Jr.
Jolene graduated from Rolesville High School where she was valedictorian and leading scorer on the girls' basketball team. She then graduated from Meredith College with honors. Her teaching career included time at Hugh Morrison and Broughton High Schools. She also organized and taught nutrition courses to student nurses at Rex and Mary Elizabeth Hospitals.
Jolene loved volunteering her time to many civic groups including the Junior Women's Club and the Town and Country Garden Club. She enjoyed working with the NC Symphony and attending their concerts for many years. Jolene was active in Hayes Barton Baptist Church for as long as her health allowed. She served as president of the Meredith College Alumnae Association and was Class Agent for the class of 1948 for over 50 years. She was also a precinct worker in her voting district for many years.
Jolene served on numerous local and state boards. Always active in historical societies, she served as Regent of the Samuel Johnston Chapter, DAR, and the Carolina Charter Chapter, DAC, and was Senior President of the NC Children of the American Revolution. She was also a member of the Wake County Historical Society.
Jolene is survived by her daughter, Susan E Spurlin, and Susan's husband, Bill Spurlin, and her two nieces, Phyllis Daniel and Patsy Woodlief.
A private family interment will be held at a later time in Rolesville Baptist Church Cemetery.
Donations in her memory may be made to the charity of one's choice or to the Jolene Weathers Edwards Scholarship Endowment at Meredith College.
