Jon McCarthy Obituary

Published by Legacy on Jun. 10, 2024.
Jon K. McCarthy, age 71, peacefully passed away on June 9, 2024. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Joanne (DiRita), his daughter Kate McCarthy-Gilmore, her husband Nathan, and their son, Oliver. He was brother to Daniel (Patricia), "Dot" to his dear grandson, whom he affectionately called "Mr. O.T.," and Uncle Jon to his beloved nieces and nephews.
Jon was a deeply committed educator. He retired as a district superintendent after spending his entire career in public-education. The number of lives he touched in his work is incalculable.
Retirement offered the opportunity to hone his skills as a gifted woodworker, spending hours in his shop and making heirloom pieces for friends and family alike.
In lieu of flowers, we request a donation to the Richard F. McNamara Cardiovascular Fellowship Program Endowment to honor the phenomenal health care professionals that have been an integral part of Jon's life for the past 24 years.

Mr. McCarthy was not only my high school principal, but my dear friend Kate´s dad. I have so many fun and fond memories of him. He was a wonderful man! His nickname for me was Car-woman, and I´ve never forgotten that! I have so many memories of spending time with them at their cottage, going to Washington D.C. with them, and him making pancakes for all of us. Joanne and Kate, my deepest sympathies. Love to you both!

My deepest and heartfelt sympathy to Joanne and Kate and their loving Family members. I had the privilege of knowing Jon as the HS Principal at our Kids School, Kenowa Hills. He was an awesome source of information to me as I raised my Family. He was patient, kind and ever only wanting to do the right and best thing for Kids in education. I have tremendous respect for him. Thank you Jon for a job well done! My Children are Leaders and respected in their fields of work and service to the community. Jon would have been very proud of how they all turned out! It really takes a village to raise responsible next generation Human Beings. I´m very thankful that Jon was a part of my village.

Jon was a dear friend who we will never forget. In the 40 years of friendship we shared many meals, boat rides, fishing expeditions, great conversations, and memories of different times we were together. We have a few beautiful wooden pieces that he made for us and we treasure them. We will miss Jon immensely.
