Jon Steven Pyle

February 28, 1939 – March 11, 2026

Jon S. Pyle, (87), of Lawrence, Kansas, died peacefully on March 11, 2026, surrounded by his family.

Jon is survived by his wife, Janice Andregg Pyle, children, Cody (Lori Kate) Pyle, Christine (Mark Thomas) Exline, Debbie (Paul) Post, Todd (Karen) Andregg, Kyra (Craig) Stromgren, sister, Sally (Bob) Bakkedahl, grandchildren, Nelson (Courtney) Pyle, James Pyle, Casey Smith, Jerod (Kristina) Post, Jordan (Heather) Post, Jake Post, Nicole (Tyler) McWilliams, Travis (Carson) Andregg, Zachary (Abigail) Andregg, Marissa (Chris) Stromgren, Caleb (Laura) Stromgren, Miranda (Chase) Lorenz, Brandon (Thao) Stromgren, thirteen great-grandchildren with two on the way.

Jon was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, Linda Kaufman Pyle, son, Cary Pyle, and brother David Pyle.

Jon was the youngest child of Nelson and Pauline Pyle born in Goodland, Kansas. Jon was a family-oriented man who was smart, creative, athletic, hard-working and a friend to many. From humble beginnings in western Kansas, he went to Emporia State University where he graduated with degrees in mathematics, physics and chemistry. He was hired by NASA where he had an exciting 35-year career which included working on the X-15 and M2-F3 experimental aircraft and concluded with project management at NASA Headquarters.

Jon was devoted husband to Linda Kaufman for 45 years and fathered three children: Cody, Cary and Christine. The family enjoyed visiting family in Arizona and Kansas, ski trips and vacationing on Balboa island. Linda passed away in 2004.

In 2007, Jon married Jan (Sealock) Andregg, an elementary-school sweetheart. They were like teenagers in love for their entire relationship. Jon quickly acclimated into the large, avid KU fan-based Andregg clan and became their beloved “Papa Jon”.

Growing up on a ranch in central Kansas, Jon learned construction, hunting and fishing with his father and brother, and those past times were consistent elements his entire life. Jon was a season craftsman, who could build anything. Wherever Jon lived he found out ‘where the fish were’ and spent time fishing. In 1997, Jon, along with his siblings, Dave and Sally, partnered in riverside property on the Alaska’s Kenai river where they created a summer retreat they dubbed DJS Folly. Jon loved fishing and it is estimated that he caught over 3,000 sockeye salmon during 25 summers in Alaska.

From 2008 to 2023 Jon and Jan owned an RV park in Kasilof, Alaska – although we should say this property was really a “fishing hole and family hang-out disguised as an RV Park!”

Jon was a tremendous artist and enjoyed many years of photography (winning best in show) and painting in both oil and watercolor. Jon was an accomplished singer in high school and college, and his peers thought he would go on to have a lasting singing career.

Jon spent his last year at Neuvant House in the memory care unit in Lawrence, Kansas suffering from Alzheimer’s. Jon was a favorite resident of the staff because he was feisty, mischievous, funny and always a gentleman. With deepest gratitude, the family would like to thank Neuvant for all of their love and care of Jon.

A memorial service for Jon S. Pyle is set for 3:00 pm, Monday, March 23, 2026, at Warren-McElwain Mortuary, Lawrence, KS. A celebration of life will follow at 23rd Street Brewery.
