Published by Legacy on Feb. 14, 2024.
Officer Jonah Hernandez
May 27, 1988 - February 11, 2024
Jonah Hernandez, 35 of El Paso, Texas, entered into eternal rest on February 11, 2024 due to injuries received in the line of duty as a Las Cruces police officer while responding to a trespassing incident. Jonah had served with the Las Cruces Police Department for two years.
Jonah was born on May 27, 1988 to Rebecca Gutierrez and Jerry Hernandez in Arcadia, CA. After attending high school he went on to work with his father Jerry. Later he decided to join an electrical trade school program and began working as an electrician. It was then he decided to pursue his lifelong dream of becoming a police officer. Jonah had a strong desire to work as a police officer because he believed in making a positive impact in people's lives, in being in a position to help those in need, and ensure the safety of individuals and families. In June 2022 he graduated from the academy with the department's largest graduating class to become a police officer with the Las Cruces Police Department.
Jonah had an enormous heart and wonderful sense of humor. He was generous, loyal, brave, and his greatest joy came from spending quality time with his loved ones. Whatever he did, he did it whole heartedly. His laughter was so contagious it would fill our hearts with warmth and happiness. He cared so deeply for the people around him. He was kind and passionate, a loving husband, son, brother and a devoted father. His departure comes as a great shock and a deep wound which is gravely felt by his entire family and countless others who loved him deeply. He will be remembered for all the heart he shared with his family and friends. He truly loved each one of them and if you knew him, you knew it. Jonah touched the lives of many with his kindness, bravery, and unwavering commitment to justice. His memory will forever live on in the hearts of those who knew him. As we bid farewell, let us remember Jonah as an inspiration and a shining example of what it means to serve others with selflessness and compassion.
Jonah is preceded in death by his grandparents Francisco and Maria Gutierrez and Margarita Hernandez. He is survived by his wife Yesenia Lopez, sons Sebastian Jonah Hernandez, Joaquin Leonel Hernandez, parents Rebecca Gutierrez, Jerry Hernandez, siblings Victoria Hernandez, Elijah De La Luz, grandfather Marcos Hernandez his brothers by choice Chris Ornelas, Joshua Torres his friend officer Carlos Hernandez and many more family and friends. Jonah was deeply loved and will be dearly missed. Those he leaves behind will always honor and cherish his memory.
Celebration of Life will be held at 10:00 AM on Wednesday February 21, 2024 at Abundant Living Faith Center, 1000 Valley Crest Dr, El Paso, Texas 79907. A Graveside will follow at Mount Carmel Cemetery, 401 S Zaragoza Rd. El Paso, Texas 79907.
