Jack and I spent a vacation at Kitzbuhl, Austria learning a bit about skiing. We were taught by The Red Devils, Pepe (!), in a small group. After the morning exercises we were taken up the mountains (there were two) to get in some "real skiing". Our instructor always chided us, telling us to "dance" on the skis, not stand. After nearly a week, he took us up quite high to experience deep powder and on the crest, one could look down a thousand feet of cliff, and on the other the deep powder everyone was eager to try. As we went along the crest I heard Jack cry out! I turned around and he had disappeared! I shifted back a bit only to see a ski pole sticking out of a hole in the snow, and looking in, there was Jack, quite literally stuck in deep powder. Our guide told him to take off his skis and create a platform on which to place himself, as it was quite impossible simply to haul him out. He was able to accomplish that task, and with the skis beneath him we could help him balance while he snapped into them. He did much better skiing down the powder than walking through it!
He had a great sense of humor and was a delightful companion on that trip. Although it was over 50 years ago, thinking of that trip, his companionship, and especially his near disappearance, brings smiles to me. Great guy!
