Jonathan Evans Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Feb. 5 to Feb. 7, 2024.
Jonathan Lynn Evans, MD passed away peacefully in the arms of Jesus, on February 1, 2024. He was born on October 20, 1947 in Youngstown, OH and spent his seasons of life in western Pennsylvania, where he grew up and raised his family, and Lexington, NC, where he concluded his days with courage and love for his family. He graduated from Mount Lebanon High School, Grove City College, and Columbia Medical School, and was certified in internal medicine, radiology, and pulmonology. During his training, he met the love of his life, Joyce Harriet Gilmore, and over 50 years, this faithful couple built a partnership of love, laughter, and generosity that has impacted those they met. None more so than their children and grandchildren who were lavished with love and given purpose through the abiding faith lived out by this couple's legacy of Christ-centered life.

Jonathan was ever playful, quick to give a joke and a smile to encourage another. His servant's heart could often be found lending a hand or an ear to anyone in need. His quiet thoughtful wisdom became foundational for those he led in his work, his church, and his home. Jonathan volunteered at Seneca Hills Bible Camp and Retreat Center, Community Alliance Church, and Butler Hospital. His generosity supported countless causes and many individuals who crossed his path. Though never a fan of attention, Jonathan's gifts of service illuminated his authentic and personal faith.

Jon loved to be active and outdoors, surrounded by close friends and family. He was an avid skier and scuba diver and enjoyed bike-riding, tennis, and any sort of pickup game in the yard. Like his father before him, Jon loved to work with his hands, carving out gifts of furniture or beautiful outdoor spaces. His thoughtful nature also created a deep love for ideas and the written word. Often he was settled in his study with a large volume and a notebook or found deep in conversation. He was also a gifted teacher, benefitting not only his children, but his church and workplaces. At every turn, one of his beloved dogs could be found at his side.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Marshall and Josephine Evans, and his sister, Marcia Sutherland (Ren). He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Joyce; his children: Stefanie Rudnicke (Paul), Lisa Mathewson (Christopher), Mark Evans (Virginia); his niece, Melinda Berdyck (Jon); his 8 grandchildren: Hannah, William, Adam, Luke, Elizabeth, Abigail, Jack, and Mae; and countless other family and friends.

A service of worship and celebration of Jonathan's life will be held on Saturday, February 17 at 11:00am, followed by a time of fellowship and light meal at Macedonia United Methodist Church, located at 10890 NC-8, Lexington, NC 27292. The service can be viewed live at this link on Feb. 17th: Jonathan Evans Memorial- Live feed

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts can be made to Seneca Hills Bible and Retreat Center, 276 Damascus Road Polk, PA or Macedonia United Methodist Church, P. O. Box 190 Southmont, NC 27351. The family would like to thank the staff of Homestead Hills Skilled Nursing Care, those at the Kate B Reynolds Hospice Home, and all those who have prayed and cared for them.

Jack and I spent a vacation at Kitzbuhl, Austria learning a bit about skiing. We were taught by The Red Devils, Pepe (!), in a small group. After the morning exercises we were taken up the mountains (there were two) to get in some "real skiing". Our instructor always chided us, telling us to "dance" on the skis, not stand. After nearly a week, he took us up quite high to experience deep powder and on the crest, one could look down a thousand feet of cliff, and on the other the deep powder everyone was eager to try. As we went along the crest I heard Jack cry out! I turned around and he had disappeared! I shifted back a bit only to see a ski pole sticking out of a hole in the snow, and looking in, there was Jack, quite literally stuck in deep powder. Our guide told him to take off his skis and create a platform on which to place himself, as it was quite impossible simply to haul him out. He was able to accomplish that task, and with the skis beneath him we could help him balance while he snapped into them. He did much better skiing down the powder than walking through it!

He had a great sense of humor and was a delightful companion on that trip. Although it was over 50 years ago, thinking of that trip, his companionship, and especially his near disappearance, brings smiles to me. Great guy!

Jon and I really enjoyed our desserts. One time Joyce, Brian and myself all ordered our dessert. Jon was last to order and told our waitress I will take one of each that was not ordered. We ended up with six desserts. Jon did let us taste his
