Jonathan H. Gilbert,PhD (Gichigamiwinini) age 72 of Ashland, WI died peacefully at home surrounded by his family on Monday, November 3, 2025. Jonathan was born on October 6, 1953 in Delaware, the son of Stanley and Jacqulyn (Keller) Gilbert.
Jonathan was united in marriage to Judy Weed on August 18, 1984 in Lac Du Flambeau, Wisconsin.
Jonathan dedicated his life to protecting the environment and connecting people across cultures. He was an advocate for education and lifelong learning. He promoted the style of shared leadership and making sure all voices were heard and valued. He loved the outdoors, dog sledding, tending his apple trees, his cats, but most of all his family.
Jonathan is survived by his wife, Judy; sons, J. Ryan (Sarah) Gilbert, Daniel Gilbert and his partner, Melissa Stoneburner; grandchildren, David and Peter; brothers, Christian (Linda) Gilbert, Jeremy (Barbara) Gilbert; sisters, Jennifer (Stephen Byrd) Gilbert, Melissa Gilbert; and sister-in-law Liz Gilbert and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Timothy Gilbert.
On Friday, November 7th at 12:00pm (noon) there will be a gathering at his home to conduct a send off ceremony and feast.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations be sent to: Great Lakes Indian Fish and Wildlife Commission in honor of Jon. Funds will provide scholarships for education and career advancement. (GLIFWC. 72682 Maple Street, Odanah, WI. 54861
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Mountain Funeral Home and Cremation Services of Ashland and Mellen, WI.
