Jonathan Ortiz-Rich Obituary

Jonathan Kenneth Ortiz-Rich died from unforeseen causes on Monday, September 1, 2025, in Los Angeles, California at the age of 32. Though he walked through storms we may not have understood, Jonathan is at rest in the light and peace with his Heavenly Father.

Jonathan was born on April 1, 1993, to his parents - Rachelle Rich & William A. Ortiz. He was so abundantly loved it was hard not to just hold him and snuggle him tight. He was an adventurous, inquisitive, active child that kept you on your toes. From a young age, he had a bright and precocious spirit, always eager to explore the world around him. Riding in the big red truck with Grandpa or picking flowers with Grandma, being with family, spending time with his dog, those were the little moments that became lasting memories.

He cherished being a big brother to Makensie and Taylor. In later years, he created special memories with Angel, Mikey, and Gabe. Family was at the heart of who he was. Music played a big role in Jonathan’s life—he loved to play the trumpet and was part of the school’s marching band. He was an avid reader, with The Lord of the Rings being one of his favorite series. As a boy he played soccer and football, and as an adult he developed a passion for MMA. He loved the beach, surfing, and laughing with friends. He had a contagious laugh and will be remembered as someone who could light up any room.

Above all, the most significant part of his life was becoming a father to his daughter, Naviah. Though his life choices became difficult overtime, the years he spent with her will be the light that keeps shining on this earth!

His memory will forever remain with his families who shared his life: Daughter, Naviah and her mother Janae (and family). Mother, Rachelle (Ronald) Blackwell; siblings Makensie and Taylor Hansen-Rich; grandmother Jean Blackwell; uncle Daniel (Elita) Blackwell; aunt Terri Blackwell; and many cousins. Birth father, William A. Ortiz; stepmother Amy Oritz; siblings Angel and Gabe Ortiz; uncle Mario Martinez; grandmother Amalia Martinez; and many cousins Stepfather (in his younger years), Timothy L. Hansen; grandparents Larry (Linda) Hansen; aunts Brenda (Greg) Svestka, Keri (Ian) Worden; and their families.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Mikey Ortiz; his uncle, John Robert Rich; grandparents Kenneth & Clareen Rich; grandfather Mario Martinez; grandfather Ronald A. Blackwell; and several family members.

A Celebration of Life will be on Saturday, October 18, 2025. The burial service will be held at 10:30am at the Nutmeg Cemetery (1344 Nutmeg Avenue) in Kalona, IA, with luncheon to follow at Cornerstone Community Church (229 S 14th Street) in Kalona. The family would love for anyone who knew Jonathan to join us for the celebration/luncheon. Kindly rsvp to [email protected], if you will be attending the luncheon so we can accommodate everyone. We’re glad you will be joining us. In lieu of flowers, feel free to participate in the GoFundMe page (https://gofund.me/69c2a1d36) for the unexpected funeral costs.
