REV. JOSAPHAT (JOE) IWASKIW, age 90, of Ancaster went to be with his Lord and Savior on April 8, 2014. He passed away peacefully with his dear wife at his side. Joe was born November 24, 1923 in Zhyravene, Ukraine to Vasyl and Ksenia (Grindzhola) Iwaskiw.
The turmoil of WWII tore Joe away from his native land to Belgium where he heard the gospel preached by a missionary from the USA. After accepting Jesus Christ as his Savior, Joe was baptized in 1948 and dedicated his life to the Lord.
After immigrating to Canada in 1951, Joe settled in Hamilton, Ontario working days and learning English in the evenings. In 1954 he felt God's call to attend the Ukrainian Bible Institute in Saskatoon to study theology and also assisting his beloved professor Dr. Moses Gitlin. At UBI, Joe met Rose Amalia whom he married on September 29, 1956.
Joe's heritage, faith and his service to God were reflected in his passion for literature, story telling, writing poetry and translating several books from English into Ukrainian. He pastored Ukrainian Baptist Churches in Oshawa and Hamilton for much of his life, and was also employed by the Wentworth County Board of Education.
Among those who will miss him are his wife of 58 years: Rose, daughter: Roxanne (& John) Mesyk, sons: Terry (& Melinda), Peter and grandchildren: Peter, Andrew Joseph, and Lily Mesyk.
Visitation will be held on Friday, April 11 from 1-2:00 PM with a funeral service at 2:00 pm at Cresmount Funeral Home - Fennell Chapel, 322 Fennell Avenue East, Hamilton, Ontario (905) 387-2111. Burial will follow at Mount Hamilton Cemetery.
Our family thanks the staff of St. Joseph's Hospital for their care of Joe during his final days, with special thanks to Agi. God bless you.
