Dr. Jose L Barroso, 100, passed away on August 30, 2024. He was born in Ciego de Avila, Cuba in 1923. He went to medical school in Havana and practiced pediatrics and family medicine while in Cuba. He met the love of his life, Maria (Purita), in 1951, married in 1953 and quickly started a family. Together they had a daughter and son. In 1968, his family moved to the United States, to escape communism. He was separated from his family for three long years, due to Cuba forbidding him from leaving, until 1971 when he was reunited with them. Once in the United States, he was licensed again to practice medicine and built a life and successful medical practice in first, Virginia and then Oklahoma, for 30 years until his retirement. The family moved to Miami in 1996 to be closer to their extended family. Jose was a witty and charming man who loved his family and spending time with them. He enjoyed traveling, mostly cruising and Las Vegas, and he also enjoyed watching a variety of sports, especially tennis and boxing.
He is survived by his daughter Maria Stephens and son Jose Barroso III, both of Miami, FL; granddaughters, Jessika (Matthew) Thompson and Rosanna Matyastik; five great grandchildren, all of Dallas, TX; and a host of other family members.
He preceded in death by his beloved wife, Maria C Barroso and his parents.
