Joseph Russell Amell

Joseph Amell, 81, a man of remarkable resilience and determination, passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 3rd, 2024 surrounded by loved ones.
Born to the late Harold and Mary Amell (Risotti) on Saturday, April 11th, 1942 in Marlborough, Massachusetts.
Despite being institutionalized at a young age due to an intellectual disability, Joseph's spirit and zest for life prevailed. With the help of his barber, he courageously broke free from institutional life and thrived on his own for decades, working multiple jobs and forging an independent path.
A well-known figure in the community, Joseph's inspiring story and warm personality earned him countless friends and admirers. In later years, he returned to a supervised group home at Beaverbrook STEP, where he received love and care in his own apartment, a testament to his unwavering spirit.
Often times, when asked if he remembered his parents, Joe would sadly say, "they didn't want me because I was different, and they sent me away." Joe's life journey motivated and inspired all the staff at Beaverbrook STEP, in making sure he had the best life possible.
Joseph leaves behind a legacy of hope, perseverance, and triumph. His life serves as a reminder that with courage, determination, and support, anyone can overcome adversity and achieve a life of purpose and fulfillment. He will be deeply missed, but his indomitable spirit will live on in the hearts of all who knew him, especially all the staff at Waverley Woods who still can't believe that their beloved JOE is gone.
Friends and family are respectfully invited to gather and remember the love and laughter Joe shared with us all during visiting hours on Friday, March 15th 2024 from 9 AM to 10:30 AM with a celebration of his life beginning at 10:30 am in The Mary Catherine Chapel of Brasco and Sons Memorial Chapels, located 773 Moody Street Waltham. Interment will follow at Mt. Feake Cemetery in Waltham. Parking Attendants will be on duty.
