In the Autumn of 1980 during my first semester, junior year at the University of Notre Dame, I had the great, good fortune to be a member of Professor Buttigieg´s History of Literary Criticism course. Although Professor Buttigieg and I differed over the Anatomy of Criticism by Northrop Frye, his course continues to have a poignant place in my intellectual life. I must apologize for the lateness of my posting of condolences and sympathies to the Buttigieg family; however, please know Professor Buttigieg remains one of my favorite teachers from my tenure as an undergraduate at Notre Dame.

I am deeply saddened to learn of Prof Buttigieg's passing. His meticulous scholarship on Gramsci had tremendous impact on me as a grad student and continues to this day. The news of Joe's passing shocked and saddened me. I own him as a friend, as fine scholar and as a gentleman. He is sorely missed. Joe was a remarkable man, of vast knowledge, humble, and respectful to all. Thank you Joe for your legacy.

Very saddened by the loss of a good friend, a fine scholar, and a good hearted man. I know Joe as a person of vast knowledge, critical thinker, but also as an amazing person, a gentleman, and as someone who could relate to others with diverse opinions with tremendous respect and openness. I miss conversing with him.
