Loving Husband, Father, Brother, Uncle, Grandpa, Cousin, and Friend
With profound love and gratitude for a life beautifully lived, we share the passing of Joseph “Joe” Callanan, age 87, born August 14, 1938, in Detroit, Michigan, to Patrick and Dolly Callanan.
Joe was the devoted and loving husband of Jacqueline (née Walsh) Callanan, his partner in all things and the love of his life. Married on July 27, 1963, they shared more than 61 years of unwavering love, faith, laughter, and loyalty, building a family that was Joe’s greatest pride and joy.
Known most lovingly as Dad, Scoop, and Buck, Joe cherished his family above all else. He was the proud and beloved father of Mary Pat (Ed) Touhy, Joe (Caryn O’Brien) Callanan, and Dan (Niki Bavelis) Callanan. He found great happiness in being a Dad, and even greater joy in being a Grandpa, fondly nicknamed “Scoop”. He was a devoted grandfather to Patrick (Connor), Mariclare (Michael), Moira, Tripp (Jenna), Tommy, Chloe, Sophia, Danny, Alexia (Jack), George, and Taso, and an adoring great-grandfather to Liam, Maggie, and Casey, who brought endless light to his later years. He is also survived by many loving cousins, nieces, nephews, friends, and neighbors whose lives he touched deeply.
Joe was predeceased by his parents and his siblings Eileen (Dunlop), Patrick ("Big Daddy") Ann (Fitzgerald), Mike, Brian, and Colleen. At just 12 years old, Joe and his six siblings, then ranging in age from 2 to 16, had faced the heartbreaking loss of both parents, — an early testament to the resilience, strength, and devotion that defined his life.
A proud Irishman and devoted Catholic, Joe treasured his heritage, his faith, and his country. Joe and Jackie spent the majority of their married life in Royal Oak, Michigan, where they were active and proud members of the National Shrine of the Little Flower community. They also cherished summers and winters spent at their vacation home “up north” in Manistee, Michigan, lovingly named Boherhallagh, by Joe in honor of the Irish townland in County Mayo from which Jackie’s parents emigrated. He was a lifelong lover of the University of Notre Dame, carrying his Fighting Irish pride wherever he went. Fall Saturdays were sacred, filled with spirited cheering and stories that grew better with every telling. Athletics, however, had long been an important part of Joe’s own life.
An accomplished athlete, Joe had a lifelong passion for rowing. As a member of the Detroit Boat Club and later a Hall of Fame inductee, he competed alongside his brother Pat, and qualified for the Olympic trials, missing the final cut by mere fractions of a second. The discipline, teamwork, and perseverance he learned on the water shaped the way he lived — with grit and heart.
Living in the Motor City, Joe built a successful career as a manufacturer’s representative serving the “Big Three” automakers. His gift of gab, warm smile, and innate ability to connect with anyone — he truly never met a stranger — made him not only successful in business, but beloved by all who knew him.
Joe attended nearly every sporting event and milestone in his children’s and grandchildren’s lives. He was their biggest fan, their steady encourager, their loudest cheerleader, and their trusted “Uber” driver.
He lived fully. He loved fiercely. He was, quite simply, one of one.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that donations be made to your favorite charity in Joe’s name or a mass said in his memory.
Though our hearts are heavy, we are endlessly grateful for 87 remarkable years and for the blessing of calling him ours.
