COHOES Genevieve Z. Callanan, 92, entered into eternal rest Thursday, December 5, 2024 at her home. She is once again reunited with the love of her life, Robert "Bink" Callanan who just passed away on November 29, 2024.
Born in Cohoes, Gen was the daughter of the late Anthony and Mary Pyskadlo Zandri. She was educated in Cohoes schools and went on to work for the NYS Dept. of Labor for 33 years until retiring in 1993.
Gen's faith always played an important role in her life. She was a devout and lifelong communicant of St. Michael's Church in Cohoes. She belonged to St. Michael's Ladies Rosary Society and would often pray novenas at the former St. Bernard's Church. She had a gift for needlework, and would crochet rosaries and knit blankets and frogs for family, friends and those in need. She was also known for her Italian cooking and everyone always looked forward to her home-cooked meals.
In her spare time, she loved to try her luck at the Racino in Saratoga, go to the Saratoga Racecourse and play her numbers as well.
Gen was the beloved wife of the late Robert "Bink" Callanan; the loving mother of Cindy Surprenant (Wilfred) and the late Robert J. Callanan II; the proud grandmother of Brian Surprenant (Andrea) and Megan Sutherland (Derek); the adoring great grandmother of Brian Jr., Victoria, Braden, Maria, Killian and Kaiden; the dear sister of Marcia Sebastian (the late Raymond) and the late Rose McDonald and Guerino "Gary" Zandri. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 10:45 a.m. from the Fitzgerald Funeral Home, 105 Vliet Blvd., Cohoes and at 11:30 a.m. in St. Michael's Church Cohoes with Fr. Peter Tkocz officiating. Interment will be private at the convenience of the family.
Relatives and friends may visit at the funeral home Monday from 4-7 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in Gen's memory to the Ronald McDonald House, 139 S. Lake Avenue, Albany, NY 12208 (rmhcofalbany.org/donate).
