Joseph F. Casazza, 76, of Wakefield passed away on Friday, September 10th at his home surrounded by his loving wife and children after a courageous battle with Cancer.

Joe was born in Arlington, MA. on February 28, 1934; he was the son of the late Joseph and Frances (LoPresti) Casazza. He is survived by his wife Miriam (Grieve) of 54 years. Joe Graduated from Arlington High School and Northeastern University School of Engineering. He began his long professional career of public service as a co-op student working for the town of Arlington before moving to Wakefield and becoming Town Engineer, then interim Public Works Director. In 1966, Joe was hired as the first ever Commissioner of Public Works in the City of Lynn, MA, until 1968 when the City of Boston called him to head their D.P.W. Joe established an outstanding reputation for managing the Department by providing distinctive leadership throughout his career, as evidence by the successful coordination of forces when dealing with snow removal, particularly the "Blizzard of '78". His career spanned three Mayoral administrations during which he consistently provided dedicated and loyal service to the City of Boston for more than 39 years. Joe was past President of both the New England chapter and National chapter of the American Public Works Association. He was a registered professional engineer in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and was known for his integrity when dealing with day to day issues. He retired in January of 2007, and was honored by the City of Boston when it named its DPW Building on Frontage Rd. "The Joseph F. Casazza Public Works Facility".

Joseph and his wife, Mimi, of 54 years, shared time between their Wakefield home and their cottage in York Beach, Maine. Joe devoted his life to spending time with his family. He also loved to fish in York Harbor on his boat, the Papa C.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his son Stephen A. Casazza and his wife Kathleen of North Reading, his son Joseph Michael Casazza and his wife Mary of Derry, NH, his daughter Cynthia J. Jewell, and her husband Robert of Manchester, NH, his daughter Joan A. Thomas of Wakefield, his daughter Judith A. Bayers and her husband Robert of Oxford, his daughter Christine M. Good and her husband Michael of Newburyport, his sister Ann M. Roche and her husband Paul of South Burlington, VT, and his aunt Gloria Ringland of Cape Coral, FL. He is also survived by 17 beloved grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.

Mr. Casazza was a true gentleman. I had the opportnity to encounter him on numerous occasions during my tenure as a City Employee. He always had a good word to say and a light comment - even during some very difficult times. His ability to get the job done met with out compare.

His leadership and kindness is missed in City Government. May his family find comfort in knowing that Mr. Casazza was an ICON in Boston. He will never be fogotten. May He Rest In Peace!

Mimi and the family, Harold, David, and I send our thoughts and prayers during this time. We have known each other for many years and grew up on Juniper Road with such great times and memories. I know my Mom and Dad had many laughs and great times with Joe and the family. Joe was such a great man ,husband ,father, grandfather, and most of all friend. We will certainly miss him very much but he will always be with us in spirit.

Family of Joe: Sorry to hear of your dear husband and fathers' passing. I remember many times needing to contact him for potholes or snow removal. I can hear him passing a message onto me through his worker. He was always professional and to his credit he instilled truth in the Boston living rules for his department and he continued to keep his department drug free. Thank you Joe for your caring and constant attention to details. Peace to his whole family.

Joe Casazza,

A leader, a highly accomplished professional, a family man, a mentor, a grandfather, a dad, an uncle, a cousin, a husband; a man who led by example in every aspect of his life.

His legacy lives within the people whose lives he touched, and the family members who shared his love.

May God Bless you and bring you peace at this time of sorrow.

Our most sincere condolences to your family.

I will never forget how Mr. Casazza helped us improve the quality of life on our old street, Allandale St. in JP and West Roxbury. He came to one of our many meetings back in around 1998 and with his positive energy, warm smile and compassionate wisdom, he changed the whole tone of that contentious gathering. Being in Joe's presence was pretty special... he guided that meeting with the wisdom of Solomon. Eventually we did get our sidewalk, with the expertise, guidance and help of the late Rep. Kevin Fitzgerald, our dear Mayor Menino and Mr. Casazza. But getting to know Joe, even so briefly, was one of the brighter points for me, of the entire process. He was one of the "good guys!"

To his children I can only add, you were lucky to have had such a wonderful man as your father. May He rest in Peace with his Angels.
Sincerely,
Pamela Ruby Russell and Eric Linter
