Joseph Diaz Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Central Chapel Funeral & Cremation Southwest on Feb. 16, 2026.
Joseph Diaz

Joseph Diaz, age 75, passed away on February 13, 2026, at his home in Chicago, Illinois, surrounded by the love of his family. He was born on January 31, 1951, the son of the late Ana Maria (nee Zamarripa) and Salvador Diaz.

Joe was a beloved husband, father, brother, Marine, mentor, and patriarch. For 56 years, he was the loving husband of Victoria (nee Burns) his devoted wife and the love of his life. He was a proud and dedicated father to Joe "Boo" Diaz (Kim), who preceded him in death, and to his devoted daughter, Jorianne Diaz (Eddie), Grandfather to Lexi Handley.

He was the dear brother of the late Sal Diaz (Vivian), Carlos "Chan" Diaz (Sheila), the late Irma Sanchez, and Mina Diaz, and a cherished brother-in-law to Mick and Kathy Shenberger. Joseph was a deeply loved uncle to many nieces and nephews who admired his wisdom, humor, and steady presence. Joe treasured time with his family and especially looked forward to hosting Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve each year.

He lived a life defined by service, hard work, and loyalty. A proud United States Marine, Joe carried the values of honor and loyalty throughout his life. He retired after many dedicated years as an insulator with Local 17 and the Chicago Park District. In true Joe Diaz fashion, he spent his "retirement" building a successful career as a home inspector and respected business owner.

Joe loved sports, riding his motorcycle, and the brotherhood of his Veteran Riders Club. He was a natural problem solver, a quiet leader, coach and a steadfast supporter of all causes. Strong, dependable, and deeply devoted to his family and community, Joseph was the foundation many leaned on - a true patriarch whose legacy will live on through those he loved and guided.

He will be remembered for his convictions and the way he lived his life - strong, solid, and valiant.

The family will receive friends at St. Gabriel Church, 600 W. 45th St, Chicago, IL 60609, Saturday, February 28th, 2026 from 9:00 a.m. until time of Funeral Mass at 10:00 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the VFW Foundation, as a tribute to the memory of Joseph Diaz, USMC. Donations are accepted online or via phone 1.833.VFW.GIVE(1.833.839.4483).
