One never knows who is destined to become a dear friend. I was friendly with Mate in 1970 - 1971 in Cambridge and met Joe and his family through that friendship. A dozen years later, I was back in the Boston area and, not knowing anyone except my fiancé Paula, I decided to go looking for Joe in Gloucester. I asked a couple of guys holdong a garage sale if they knew Joe: "Who wants to know?" they asked suspiciously.
After I told them my story, they gave me directions. What struck me was that these guys were protective of Joe and that he was part of a community that looked out for one another.
Joe and Judy gave us a cast-iron skillet as a wedding present, which I loved.
Joe was authentic; a big-hearted, caring and loving friend; always accessible and engaging.
In a time of personal crisis, Joe and Judy were there for me, keeping it real.
When I made my first CD, I brought it to Joe for evaluation. I never will forget - he fired up that huge car and we drove around Cape Ann late one starry night, listening together. Joe's genuine and very favorable, enthusiastic response did a lot for my confidence and self-esteem in this area. If Joe liked it, -- I knew it was not without merit. No cultural prejudices, no over-analysis. Joe was without guile, honest in expressing himself.
Joe and Judy always treated us to their generous hospitality, feeding us and making us welcome and comfortable.
Joe introduced me to the glories of kasha (buckwheat to the culturally underpriveleged). He was the only person who called me "Wolfie."
Thanks for your love, laughs and friendship, Joe. You are in our hearts forever. Peace, brother.

So appreciate the loving attention, care and kindness Joe showed to my mother as she aged. And to Meredith, Lauren and myself when we visited family in Gloucester.

My prayers and sympathy to your family for the loss of Joe. The description of Joe's commitment to helping others and fostering peace throughout his life is entirely consistent with the person I met as my SJP classmate more than 50 years ago. Joe never hesitated to be engaged and to help others be the best they could be. God bless. Gene Nuccio, SJP '67.

My thoughts are with the entire family. I'll always remember growing up in the neighborhood...Joe was like having another kid around! Water gun fights in the house, spray painting his yard into a baseball field, annual Water Country trips. All great memories I'll never forget. Thanks, Joe.

Joe was one of a kind. My family and I had the good fortune to meet him when he was physical therapist for my mother. Joe's genuine compassion and caring made a world of difference to her during her recuperation. She always looked forward to his visits and Joe never ceased to make her smile, laugh, and bring her hope. We will always be grateful to him. I was very saddened to learn of his passing: my deepest sympathy and condolences to his family & friends. He will be sorely missed.

May my brother Joe Gross rest in peace during my time living with Joe and his family I learned what true love of life is, and Joe spread love and peace of mind every day of his life. He will live on in our hearts because he impacted our minds and he will never be forgotten, his legacy will be " He came, he saw and he conquered" he came with love he saw hatred, and he conquered hate with his love. Thank you Brother Joe I will continue our battle to change the world for the better
