Joseph Lane Hanson, 24, of Nisland, South Dakota, passed into the arms of our Heavenly Father on May 7, 2025. Born on March 9, 2001, in Sturgis, SD, Joseph brought a spark to the world that will never be forgotten.
Joe spent his early years in Newell and later attended Belle Fourche High School, graduating in 2019. He was a proud athlete, playing football, wrestling, and running track—deemed wild at heart, gritty, and fiercely loyal to his teammates and coaches. Joe pursued his passion for working with his hands at Lake Area Technical Institute in Watertown, SD, where he earned his welding degree in 2021. He went on to work at Mack Steel in Watertown and later spent time with EZ Fab and American Ag in Belle Fourche. Most recently, he served the town of Nisland as a part-time maintenance worker. He had a knack for getting things done—always spotting the most efficient way to work and making sure you knew it!
You could always count on Joe, whether farming, working livestock, or simply showing up when someone needed him. He spent summers alongside Scott Hinkhouse and winters helping Paul and Judy Hinkhouse, in addition to many other neighbors throughout the area. He especially cherished being part of local cattle brandings, where his strong work ethic and big heart shone.
That same heart of gold was felt deeply at home, from working on projects with his dad and brother to taking the time to piece together a puzzle with Mom. He also had a special bond with his big sister, Millie, rooted in their mutual love of adventure—they especially enjoyed attending rock concerts together, snowboarding at Terry Peak, and cliff jumping in the Black Hills. An even deeper bond was shared with his younger brother, Darin—his built-in best friend. They did everything together—working, playing, and dreaming big. Their love for the outdoors was a defining part of them, especially in their drive to hunt and fish—Joe was always eager to ‘rip lips’ with Darin by his side.
Joseph was loyal, outspoken, and carefree, always down for a good time. He lived for the thrill—going fast in any way he could. Everything ran on “Joe time,” and those who knew him wouldn’t have it any other way. We’ll never forget his infectious laugh, mischievous grin, and warm hugs—or his pranks, especially the ones involving hot peppers! Joe had a unique gift for making others feel exactly how they needed to, whether it was a boost of motivation or simply feeling welcomed. Though he loved telling stories, he was an even better listener, always genuinely caring about what you had to say. He could make you feel better without even trying—just by being himself.
Joseph poured everything he had into every moment he was given. He crammed an entire lifetime of love, laughter, and adventure into his years and lived them all with no regrets. He will be missed more than words can express. We will remember Joseph with every laugh, every tear, every wild story, and every moment spent doing things a little bolder and a little better—just like Joe would.
Joseph is lovingly survived by his parents, Michael and Michelle Hanson of Nisland; sister, Millie Hanson of Spearfish; brother, Darin Hanson of Nisland; paternal grandfather, Jim Hanson of Sturgis; uncles Tommy (Leah) Gifford of Hermosa, Pat (Becky) Hanson of Sturgis, Sandy (Kristina) Hanson of Vale; aunts Nadine Wetz of Great Britain, Joei (Bryce) Tieman of Sturgis, and Erin (Chris) Williams of Sturgis; several cousins; and his beloved dogs, Grizzly, Ted, and Molly. His maternal grandparents, Jerry and Beverly Gifford, his paternal grandmother, Jan Hanson, his uncle, Stuart Wetz, and his childhood dog, Sally, were waiting to greet him in heaven.
We are deeply humbled by the outpouring of love and support from near and far during this difficult time. Thank you, from the bottom of our hearts. We see God’s hand in every act of kindness, every prayer, and every gesture of generosity. His goodness has shone through the hearts of our community, our friends, and our family— for that, we are truly grateful.
