Joseph Francis Hicks Sr., 74, of Norwood passed away suddenly early Tuesday morning February 28, 2023, at home. He was born March 28, 1948, in Darby, PA to the late Francis & Hannah (Hegarty) Hicks.
Joe was a graduate of Monsignor Bonner High School and an Army veteran who will be remembered for his selflessness, authenticity, and devotion to family. Throughout his working years, Joe was a self-made and skilled institutional computer hardware technician who enjoyed sitting under his "big green umbrella" during family vacations at Cape May Point and Ocean City, hosting legendary BBQs, and attending Eagles games with his brothers-in-law as a 36-year season ticket holder. During this time and until her death, his care and sacrifice for his wife, Mary ("Sue"), was unmatched.
After his retirement from industry, Joe continued "working" full-time as a loving husband to Margie, as a father, a grandpop, and the reliable family handyman. He enjoyed mentally challenging his grandchildren and cheering for them at sporting events, and was quick to assist others with home improvement projects.
Joe was an avid reader and technology lover who valued community service, devoting many hours to both St. Cyril's and St. Gabriel's churches.
He was a modest man of patience and quiet confidence who spoke infrequently. But, when he did, everyone listened. His voice will be greatly missed.
In addition to his parents, Joe was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary ("Sue"), his mother-in-law, Mary, and his brother-in-law, John.
He is survived by his wife, Margie, his Aunt Cass, his brother-in-law, Joe, his siblings, Jim, Coleen (Jim), and Glen (Deb), his sons, Sean (Lisa), Joseph Jr. (Kerry), and Stephen (Joseph), and his stepchildren, Laura (Jim), Christy (Steve), and Brian (Kathrine). He also has nine grandchildren (Lauren, Amanda, Colin, Rachel, Kate, Madison, Aidan, Kylie, and Erin), and several nieces and nephews.
Family and friends are invited to attend Joe's viewing on Wednesday March 8, 2023, from
9:00 to 11:00 AM at St. Gabriel Catholic Church, 233 Mohawk Ave., Norwood. A Funeral Mass will immediately follow at 11:00 AM. Interment in Ss. Peter & Paul Cemetery, Springfield.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Joe's memory may be made to St. Gabriel's Church or to a charity meaningful to you.
