Joey was a one of a kind type of person with his outstanding sense of humor. We will forever remember his laughter, smiles, kindness, love for animals, and his love for music and his talents with the guitar. He has touched so many people in this area with his music over the years. The memories of those nites out and about are never ending whether playing at a bar or just jamming at the Mad Pad...Will always cherish Medicine Man's cover song of Pink Floyd's "Wish You Were Here"...Our sympathy to his family and loved ones...May God bless you now and forever Joey!! We will miss you and love you forever.

I haven't thought about high school in a very long time, but when I think about Joey Hughes I have to smile. Joy, kindness and loyalty are the qualities I remember in Joey. He was a great guy with a smile and laugh that filled the room. He will be missed. SDHS '85

Joey was a great friend. He was always willing to listen if you wanted to talk. My biggest memory of Joey is when we would all get together and watch football at his house. He was a huge Redskin fan. He will be missed.

my first memory of joey was in high school. i was 2 years younger than him and a freshman at SDHS. joey was onstage at a junior variety show playing "paranoid" and "rebel yell" with his band. i had just started playing guitar about that time & seeing him up on stage ripping up his black gibson explorer completely wowed me. i thought "now, that is cool". and that is exactly what joey was... cool. i was lucky enough to work with him after we graduated high school & we became fast friends along with mike rodgers & tracy templeton. i can't count the times we all piled in mike's jeep and went to concerts, shows at trax, some party in the boondocks or just hung out at mike's apartment and passed a guitar back & forth trading riffs. there were days when joey and i both had the day off so we'd just get in the car and ride all over central & northern va looking for any guitar store we could find on the map. one time, while lost in DC joey points out the window and says "oh hey, there's the white house!" - we had no idea where we were other than right in front of the white house. most of my twenties was spent with joey & the crew until i moved away to texas. i had always intended to go back and hang with the guys again when i got some spare time. i wish i could be there this weekend to celebrate & honor joey's life with the boys. when i think of joey, mostly i remember having fun & laughing. that is how i will always remember him. joey was a dear friend and a good man.
peace be with you, bro. as always, be cool.

Joey was one of those people that when you met him, you were instantly included, for he had the capacity to accept people just as they are. Stood up for others, laughed at himself and made others laugh at themselves, and he had the greatest smile! His love for music broadened all of us who knew him. He will always be missed, but we know he is watching over everyone he knew! Our SDHS class of '85 will always remember the joy of growing up with him!

I will miss thinking of you and knowing that you are not in the world with me, anymore. But, I am so relieved to know where you are... and that now, you are feasting at the Lord's table, Joe. No pain... no sadness...just joy. I cannot begin to tell you what a wonderful friend you were to me in high school. I swear, I think I spent more time at your house than I did my own! You has such a kind, gentle, soul... and always made me laugh. I remember the day, so vividly, that you, Demetria, and I were in that wreck in the little red Honda, and we all got out, unharmed (thank GOD!), and laughing, hysterically! So many crazy, fun, memories from our youth...... Thank you for those, my dear friend. Rest now, Joe. Rest in the arms of our Saviour. I love you.

I worked with Joe years ago. He was good at what he did and I from what I hear he was pretty good at just about everything he set out to do. I was shocked to hear of his passing. I enjoyed working with Joe but it was hard for me to concentrate on my work with him around because he liked to cut up and joke a lot. We were occasional fishing buddies. I remember once on Lake Nelson in a rented John boat when he went into "Pirate" mode. "Avast ye land lovers, hoist up the main sail. Make ready on the cannon. Rammin Speed." Then in a lower more sinister voice he said, "Thems that dies will be the lucky ones. Arrrrrgh". I laughed til I cried. We didn't catch much fish that day but we had loads of fun. Joe was just that way. You always went away from him feeling better from the experience. I will never forget him.

I had the pleasure of working with Joe for several years. He was good at his job and from what I could see, good at just about everything he wanted to do. But I couldn't work around him. He would keep me in stitches laughing at all of his jokes and antics so I couldn't concentrate on what I was working on. He was a good fishing buddy at times. I remember one time when we were on Lake Nelson in a rented john boat when he went into "Pirate" mode. "Ahoy there, Hoist the main sail. Make ready on the cannon. Go to rammin speed. " Then in a lower more sinister voice: "Thems that dies will be the lucky ones". I laughed til I cried. Joe was that way. Always fun to be around. I will miss him. Everyone that knew him will miss him. Sing a tune to old "Smitty Mouse" over on the other side.

Life is but a stopping place,
A pause in what's to be,
A resting place along the road,
to sweet eternity.
We all have different journeys,
Different paths along the way,
We all were meant to learn some things,
but never meant to stay...
Our destination is a place
Far greater than we know.
For some the journey's quicker,
For some the journey's slow.
And when the journey finally ends,
We'll claim a great reward,
And find an everlasting peace,
Together with the lord.

Joey's sense of humor and kind nature bonded him to our hearts and his friends to each other. You could be "yourself" around Joey and he made you feel accepted, appreciated and even special. Joey was welcome in many circles. I feel truly blessed to have been part of his. I hope he rejoices in heaven, liberated from pain and aware of the love and good he inspired in us.

There are several classmates that had the priviledge of spending our entire school careers with Joey, from first grade thru graduation. As years went by and we got older, cliques and social groups formed but one thing remained the same and that was Joey. He always had a smile and something nice to say to everyone, no matter what "circle" you were in. Several years after graduation I ran in to him again and we stayed in touch for a while.. We were both going thru rough patches in our lives and it was nice to have an old friend around... For whatever reason we lost touch again and I hadn't seen him for many years. Another classmate and friend recently told me he wasn't doing very well, but I never would have thought...
Rest in peace our dear friend.... and tell "Slinky", Billy & Claytor "Hello"...We will see you all again.

Do not stand
at my grave and weep.
I am not there. I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds
that blow.
I am the diamond glints on snow.
I am the sunlight
on ripened grain.
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awake in the
morning's hush
I am the soft uplifting rush
of quiet birds in circling flight.
I am the soft star that
shines at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry
I am not there.
I did not die.

Joey was just the Best! He was the one person you always wanted around. Your circle wasn't complete unless he was part of it. Now a link in the chain that always kept me anchored is gone. He was one of my pillars and he always be missed. Joey, may God bless you now and always and keep you safe forever.
