Joseph "Terry" Jones

1949 - 2025

With heavy hearts, we share that Joseph "Terry" Jones has passed from this life on Earth, on November 3, 2025, surrounded by his family.

Terry was born on August 25, 1949, in Hobbs, NM, to Jake and Billie Sue Jones. His family moved to San Juan County in 1951. Most of his childhood was spent at the El Paso Camp in Blanco, where he loved playing in the river with friends, playing in the hills, and riding his bike backwards across the Blanco Bridge. He attended Bloomfield schools, participating in baseball, football, track, and other student activities. His sophomore year his family moved to Aztec, where he continued his love of sports.

After graduating Aztec High School in 1967, Terry attended the University of New Mexico, until he was drafted in the US Army and was deployed to Vietnam. He proudly served two tours in Vietnam. During his last tour, he was proud to have taught English to the Vietnamese in Saigon.

In returning to the states, Terry picked up where he left off and enrolled in New Mexico State University, where he studied Engineering and Geology. During the summers he found his passion in working in the oilfield.

Terry is survived by his loving wife, Charliss, of 49 years, daughter Jenny Jones Allen (Jeff), and son John Jones. 3 granddaughters Kaylee and Scarlett Jones, and McKenzie Allen. Mother-in-law Sandra Townsend, sister-in-law Joni Lynn Phillips (Stan), brother-in-law Bill Townsend, and numerous nieces and nephews. Brother Tim Jones, sisters Carol Miller (Kent), Marsha Englehart (Michael), and Paula Irvin (Dave).

Terry is preceded in death by his father-in-law Johnnie Townsend, his father Jake Jones, and mother Billie Sue Jones.
Services will be held Friday, November 7th, at 10:30, at the First Baptist Church in Aztec (700 Navajo Ave.). Following the service, burial will be at Aztec Cemetery. Viewing will be at Cope Memorial Chapel in Aztec (405 S. Main) on Thursday, November 6th, from 4:00pm-7:00pm.

Our family would like to express special thanks to the doctors and nurses during Terry's treatment with cancer.
