Joseph Kaufman Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Sinai Memorial Chapels - Delray Beach on Jan. 2, 2026.
The world is a little dimmer today as we say goodbye to our beloved Joseph Kaufman, who passed away on December 26th at the age of 82. Joseph was born on September 25th, 1943 in Brooklyn, New York.

Joe was an educator and a coach who will be remembered for his everlasting impact on his students, players and the community around him. He was so many things to so many different people. He was the older brother, a loving husband and father, an ADORING grandfather, and a truly beloved figure in the lives of everyone in his family. Joe had a spiritual connection with the soundtrack to his life, especially the Grateful Dead. He passed a love-hate relationship with the New York Mets down to his children. We collectively forgive him. More than any words can ever express, we will miss him in a million different ways every day.

He is survived by:

Patricia Popiel [spouse]

Elizabeth (John) [daughter]

Mark (Marie), David (Fortune) and Andrew (Aryn) [sons]

Reece, Max, Oliva, Tyler and Emerson [grandchildren]

Janie and Robert Friedlander [sister and brother-in-law]

Marcia and Steven Rich [sister and brother-in-law].

Joseph was preceded in death by his parents Herbert and Minnie Kaufman.

Services will be held in Rockville Centre at Congregation B'nai Sholom-Beth David on Sunday, January 11th at 11:30 am. The address is 100 Hempstead Ave, Rockville Centre, NY 11570. After that, everyone is invited to join us in celebrating Joe's life at David and Fortune's house immediately following services. Their address is 468 Arizona Ave, Rockville Centre, NY 11570. We look forward to seeing everyone.

Joe Kaufman was one of the finest people I have ever known and was the truest of Black Knights. He touched his players on the baseball and football field through passion, humor and love! His players adored him and his colleagues cherished his friendship and humor as well. His students enjoyed his teaching and learned to love Math.Every Monday during the fall was a sad but comical commentary of the " Same old Jets"! Yet his dedication and unwavering support for them and the Mets never faded. Joe made the world and Stamford High a better place!

Coach Kaufman was a huge part of our families lives during our children´s time at Stamford High. His coaching of baseball and football, his love of the game, his discipline and his wonderful demeanor with the kids and parents made the experience unforgettable. Sending our deepest condolences to the family. The O´Meara and Mattioli family.
