Joseph Landi Obituary

Published by Legacy on Oct. 2, 2025.
Joseph O. Landi, a devoted father and grandfather, and a creative talent and business owner in the advertising field for nearly 60 years, passed away on September 28th, 2025 in Middletown at the age of 89.
He studied graphic design at the School of Industrial Arts and Pratt Institute in Brooklyn and began his career at the Manhattan agency, Ross Design Studios, in the late 1950s. For most of the 1960s, he held several positions at Apkarian & Bear before opening his own agency Landi & Handler on Vanderbilt Avenue in 1969. Following his partner's retirement, the firm became Landi & Rosiak and continued operations into the late 1980s. These partnerships served a wide range of clients, including Hasbro, Japan Airlines, Hoffmann-La Roche and Becton Dickinson.
Later, he formed Graphia Design and continued servicing major consumer products companies before spending the last decade of his career as a valued freelancer at Lukasiewicz Design in New York.
Joe met his wife of 52 years, Martha, at Coney Island. They raised three children, first in Brooklyn, then Cambria Heights, Queens, where they bought their first house. In 1968, they moved to Orange County where they settled in Monroe and stayed for over 40 years. Martha pre-deceased him in 2010.
Joe was an avid hunter and fly fisherman, skills he learned spending summers and weekends with beloved members of his father's family in Kingston. For decades, he was a member of the Monroe Gun Club and fished on the Esopus River in Phoenicia every spring and summer for nearly his entire life. Later, he took up golf and played regularly with the Hudson Valley Traveling Golf Club.
In the 1970s, Joe embraced photography. One of the highlights of his life was traveling on safari in Kenya. His photos of the trip decorated the house, including one snapped yards away from a yawning lion; another featured the graceful necks of giraffes silhouetted against the setting savannah sun. He was also an accomplished oil painter of both portraits and landscapes, and a Mr. Fix-it of awe-inspiring abilities. His family would joke that he could repair a burst balloon.
His rock walls were the envy of the neighborhood for which he'd be seen on any given Sunday in his best church clothes loading his car with slabs of shale from the collapsing cliff behind the Monroe Bowl-O-Fun.
He is survived by his children Theresa Daniel in Kingston, Joseph Landi in Manhattan, and Patricia Gibbons and her husband Robert in Goshen. He is lovingly remembered by: his grandchildren Martha Daniel and Alex and Jennifer Landi; his sister and brother-in-law Phyllis and Ben Cappadora in Cleveland, OH; sister-in-law Linda Landi in Cincinnati, OH; and brother- and sister-in-law Tom and Pen McBride in East Islip, NY. He was pre-deceased by his forementioned wife, his parents, Joseph and Angelina, his younger brother, Patrick, and his grandson Orlando Daniel.
His family thanks Middletown Park Rehabilitation and Healthcare for its attentive, compassionate and loving care of Joe in the final stage of his life, as well as Smith Seaman & Quackenbush Funeral Home for its help and support in handling arrangements at this sensitive time.
A private memorial service will be held at a later date.

Joe´s son, Joseph P. Landi, has been a close friend for more than 45 years, through college and our earliest jobs. (For all of our misbehavior, it´s most remarkable that we weren´t fired from those jobs!)

To Joe P. and our close circle of friends, we will remember them always as Joe´s parents, "Mr. and Mrs. Landi". Joe O. and Martha were always warm and welcoming. They extended great hospitality whenever we saw them. They treated us as family.

I am privileged to call young Joe my friend. He has always been there for me whenever I needed him - the true test of loyalty, integrity and honor. Joe O. and Martha have much to be proud of in their son.

We will miss Joe O. and Martha for their good humor and the light they brought to our lives.
